16MAINTENANCEbEAm AND SpLITTING WEDGEBefore each use, lubricate both sides of the beam (where it comes intocontact with the splitting wedge) with engine oil. The wedge plate onthe log splitter is designed so the gibs on the side of the wedge platecan be removed and rotated and/or turned over for even wear.Make certain to readjust the adjustment bolts so the wedge movesfreely, but no excess space exists between the wedge plate and thebeam.ENGINECheck Engine oilStop the engine and wait several minutes before checking the oil1.level.Remove the oil fill dipstick.2.Check the oil level on the dipstick. With the engine on level3.ground, the oil must be to the FULL mark on the dipstick.Replace the dipstick and tighten.4.Changing Engine oilRefer to an authorized Sears Service Center.Service Air FilterThe air filter prevents damaging dirt, dust, etc., from entering thecarburetor and being forced into the engine and is important to enginelife and performance.WARNINGNever run the engine without an air cleaner completely assembled.Service the cartridge every 25 operating hours or every season.Service the cartridge more often under dusty conditions. To Service Air FilterLoosen the air filter cover screw, but do not remove the screw1.from the cover. Swing the cover down to remove from the hinge.Inspect the filter for discoloration or dirt accumulation. If either is2.present, proceed as follows:Clean the inside of compartment and cover thoroughly anda.remove the cartridge.Reassemble the new cartridge in the compartment. Swing theb.cover down and tighten the screw loosened earlier.WARNINGTemperature of muffler and nearby areas may exceed 150˚ F(65˚C).Avoid these areas.hyDRAuLIC FLuID AND INLET FILTERWARNINGStop the engine and relieve hydraulic system pressure before chang-ing or adjusting fittings, hoses, tubing, or other system components.Check the hydraulic fluid level in the log splitter reservoir tank beforeeach use. Maintain the fluid level within the range specified on thedipstick at all times.Change the hydraulic fluid in the reservoir every 100 hours of opera-tion. Follow the steps below:Disconnect the suction hose from the bottom of the reservoir tank.1.Carefully unthread the inlet filter and clean it with penetrating oil.2.See Figure 18.Allow the fluid to drain into a suitable container.3.Reinsert the filter and refill the reservoir. Approved fluids include4.Shell Tellus® 32 Hydraulic Fluid, Dexron® III / Mercon automatictransmission fluid, Pro-Select™ AW-32 Hydraulic Oil or 10WAW-ISO viscosity grade 32 hydraulic oil.Maintain the fluid level within the range specified on the dipstick5.at all times.NOTE: Always dispose of used hydraulic fluid and engine oil atapproved recycling centers only.Contaminants in fluid may damage the hydraulic components. Flushingthe reservoir tank and hoses with kerosene whenever service isperformed on the tank, hydraulic pump or valve is recommended. Anyrepair to the hydraulic components should be performed by a SearsService Center.WARNINGUse extreme caution when working with kerosene. It is an extremelyflammable fluid.hydraulic FilterChange the hydraulic filter every 50 hours of operation. Use only a 10micron hydraulic filter. Order part number 723-0405.Figure 18
