This gives the illusionof more shades of color than the displaycan really reproduce, and smooths theappearance of gradually shaded areas inimages. Unfortunately, dithering is an issuefor KVM extenders because it makes theimage appear to be changing all the timeeven when it is static. This means that agreat deal of unnecessary network data issent to the VNC viewer, reducing the videoframe rate and making mouse responseappear slow. The ‘Ignore Dithering’ option works byignoring small variations in the video fromframe to frame. This increases performanceand reduces network traffic when thehost computer is an Apple Mac or anothercomputer that has dithered video output. It also improves performance if the videosource is noisy (e.g. from a camera or aVGA-to-DVI converter). ‘Ignore Dithering’is disabled by default to give full coloraccuracy and the best possible frame ratefrom non-dithered video sources.Video settingsThis option provides a range of options related to the video configuration.Note: If using the Paste Clipboard feature, within the VNC viewer properties, ensure that in theInputs section, the Share clipboard with server option is enabled. See Appendix G for details.Video sourceSelects which video input touse. It is possible to displayboth single head screens (ifconnected) or select oneover the other. If you areviewing Dual-Link videoresolutions, only one headwill be available.use remote ddcUses the DDC of themonitors connected to theALIF Reciever. If this optionis un-ticked you can select aDDC to use that is reportedby the ALIF 2112T.hot Plug detectWhen ticked, allows you tochoose one of four hot plugdetect periods when, aftera display is connected, theDDC information is sought.ThresholdAdjusts the level of ditheringnoise that is ignored. The ‘Auto’button attempts to choose asuitable value automatically, butthe level can also be adjustedmanually using the slider orarrow buttons. The best valueis of course a compromisebetween capturing all the ‘real’screen changes whilst ignoringthe (almost invisible) ditheringnoise. A good way to choosethe value is to watch theDisplay Activity indicator for astatic screen. If the Thresholdis too low, the Display Activitywill be a high percentage whilenothing is really changing. Ifthe Threshold is too high, theDisplay Activity will be verylow (or zero) but some realchanges in the screen may bemissed.
