A2.4.3 Electrical connectionsGroundingIf, for functional reasons, the intrinsically safe circuit needsto be grounded by means of a connection to the potentialequalization, it may only be grounded at one point.Intrinsic safety proofIf transmitters are operated in an intrinsically safe circuit,proof that the interconnection is intrinsically safe must beprovided in accordance with IEC/EN 60079-14 as well asIEC/EN 60079-25.The supply isolators / DCS inputs must feature intrinsicallysafe input protection circuits in order to eliminate hazards(spark formation).In order to provide proof of intrinsic safety, the electricallimit value must be used as the basis for the EC-typeexamination certificates for the equipment (devices); thisincludes the capacitance and inductance values of thecables.Proof of intrinsic safety is said to have been provided if thefollowing conditions are fulfilled when a comparison iscarried out in relation to the limit values of the equipment:Transmitter(intrinsically safe equipment)Supply isolator / DCS input(related equipment)U i ≥ U oI i ≥ I oP i ≥ P oL i + L c (cable) ≤ L oC i + C c (cable) ≤ C oField (Ex area) Control room (safe area)Fig. 3A Transmitter B Supply isolator / DCS input with supply /segment couplerInstallation in a potentially explosive atmosphereTransmitters can be installed in all kinds of industrialsectors.
