The routersinclude a full complement of memory and flash memory to supportdual software images. Standard routing capabilities include: IP and IPXrouting, OSPF, RIP V1/2, integrated IS–IS, multicast routing, QoS, IEEE802.1Q VLAN and IGMP v1, 2 and 3 and more.MULTIVENDOR INTEROPERABILITY ACROSS THE WANTo accommodate today’s multivendor networking environments, 3Comrouters are designed to interoperate with standards-based equipmentfrom other vendors. The 3Com Router 5000 Family has been “TollyVerified for Interoperability with Cisco,” reducing implementation andtesting time for enterprises with core Cisco routers.ADVANCED SECURITY AND CONTROL FEATURESThe Router 6000 Family helps secure and safeguard sensitive informationagainst unauthorized access. Security and control features include:AAA, RADIUS authentication, a stateful packet inspection firewall,denial-of-service (DoS) blocking and Access Control Lists (ACLs). L2TPand IPSec VPNs with 3DES and AES encryption provide additionalsecurity over the WAN.The embedded firewall includes support for ACLs, plus generic routingencapsulation (GRE), network address translation (NAT), NAT traversaland application layer gateways. Business applications are able to passeasily through the firewall and across the VPN.VOICE, DATA AND VIDEO INTEGRATIONThe 3Com Router 5000 Family delivers advanced QoS, includingDiffServ support, for effective traffic management on networks that runconverged voice, data and video applications. Utilizing IP differentiatedservices for applications and ATM QoS for traffic and physical layerprioritization, the routers are equipped to handle the most demandingmultimedia networking. This helps assure the level of service requiredfor delay-sensitive traffic and continuous business operation, evenduring heavy network use. The routers support both IEEE 802.1pprioritization and IEEE 802.Q VLANs.Voice MIMs support both analog and digital voice communications.They enable enterprises, service providers and managed serviceproviders to connect the public switched telephone network (PSTN)and traditional telephony equipment (including PBXs, key systems,analog phones and fax machines) directly to the routers without addi-tional equipment.RESILIENCE AND REDUNDANCY FOR MAXIMUM UPTIMEThe routers are designed for high resiliency to meet stringent enter-prise uptime standards. To ensure continuous operation, they supportredundant links and provide extra bandwidth to minimize downtimeand ensure resilience in case of service disruptions. Reliability featuresinclude configuration rollback, multilinks, Virtual Router RedundancyProtocol (VRRP), Backup Control Center (Configuration/Port) and DialControl Center.In addition, the routers include 32 MB of flash memory to hold multi-ple configuration files and operating system images for recovery pur-poses. If the router cannot boot from a recently updated software imageor configuration file, it can boot from a specified backup file or imageresiding in this memory.
