Whatthis means is setting the machine in a state that makes it safe toservice or repair.Place the machine in a Safe Condition before performingany service, maintenance work or storage preparation byperforming the following:Safe Condition- Ensure chipper is resting on the ground.- Disengage PTO.- Set parking brake and shut off tractor engine. Removeignition key.- Ensure all components have stopped moving.- Block and chock tractor wheels.2.7 Safety TrainingSafety is a primary concern in the design and manufacture ofWallenstein products. Unfortunately, efforts to provide safeequipment can be wiped out by a single careless act.• It is the operator's responsibility to read,understand and follow ALL safety andoperation instructions in this manual.• Train all new personnel and review instructions frequentlywith existing workers. Be certain only a properly trainedand physically able person will use the machinery. A personwho has not read and understood all instructions is notqualified to use the machine. An untrained operator cancause possible serious injury or death.• Know the tractor controls and how to stop the machinequickly in an emergency.• If this machine is used by any other person, loaned orrented, it is the owner's responsibility to make certain thatprior to using, every operator:- reads and understands the owner's manual- is instructed in safe and proper use of the equipment- understands and knows how to perform the SafeCondition procedure2.8 Being Prepared• Never use the machine until the operators have beenadequately trained in the safe operation of the machine andhave read and completely understand:- safety, operation and feature sections of this manual- each of the safety messages found on the safety signson the machine.- engine operator's manual• PPE is recommended during assembly, installation,operation, adjustment, maintenance, repair, removal,cleaning, and transport. Do not allow long hair, loose fittingclothing or jewelry around equipment.• Prolonged exposure to loud noise maycause permanent hearing loss! Powerequipment with or without equipmentattached can often be noisy enough tocause permanent, partial hearing loss.• Always wear hearing protection if the noise in any area youwork in exceeds 80 dB.- Noise over 85 dB on a long-term basis can causesevere hearing loss.- Exposure to noise over 90 dB over a long-term basismay cause permanent, total hearing loss.- Hearing loss from loud noise (from engines, chainsaws,radios, and other such sources close to the ear) iscumulative over a lifetime, without hope of naturalrecovery.• Clear working area of stones, branches or hidden obstaclesthat might be hooked or snagged, causing injury ordamage.• Determine where chips will be piled and ensure it does notinterfere with safe operation of the machine• Be aware of overhead hazards: branches, cables, electricalwires.• Use this machine only in daylight or good artificial light.• Be sure machine is properly mounted, adjusted and in goodoperating condition.• Perform the Pre-operation Checklist procedure beforestarting work (see Pre-Operation Checklist on page 30).
