116 Glossaryadapter—A device that provides a compatible connection between twounits. For example, the tablet’s internal display adapter receivesinformation from the software and translates it into images on thescreen. An adapter can take a number of forms, from amicroprocessor to a simple connector. An intelligent adapter (onethat is capable of doing some processing) may also be called acontroller.Alternating Current (AC)—The type of power usually supplied toresidential and commercial wall outlets. AC reverses its direction atregular intervals. Compare Direct Current (DC).application—A set of instructions that can be executed by a tablet.App shortcut—An application icon that can be placed on a Homescreen. Touching one opens the app without having to firstopen the Apps screen. See also icon.B backup—A copy of a file, usually on a removable disk, kept in case theoriginal file is lost or damaged.baud rate—The speed at which a communication device, such as aprinter or modem, transmits information. Baud rate is the number ofsignal changes per second (not necessarily the same as bits persecond). See also bits per second.bits per second (bps)—A way of measuring the speed at whichinformation is passed between two devices. This is the basic unit ofmeasure used in modem communications, and is similar, but notidentical, to the baud rate. See also baud rate.Bluetooth—A proprietary open wireless technology standard that usesshort wavelength radio transmissions to exchange data over shortdistances. Bluetooth can transmit from fixed and mobile devices,and provides a high level of security.Bookmark—A Shortcut can be created and placed on a Home screenfrom a selected browser bookmark. Touching the icon opens theWeb browser to the chosen bookmarked page. See also icon.boot—To start the tablet.
