Press down on the switch floatPreparing the Machine forMowingTo help align the machine for successive cuttingpasses, do the following to the No. 2 and No. 3cutting-unit baskets:1. Measure in approximately 12 cm from the outeredge of each basket.2. Either place a strip of white tape or paint a lineonto each basket paralleling the outer edge ofeach basket (Fig. 21).Training PeriodBefore mowing greens with the Greensmaster 3100,we suggest that you find a clear area and practicestarting and stopping, raising and lowering the cuttingunits, turning, etc. This will help you gain confidencein the performance of the Greensmaster 3100.If you shift to the No. 2 position whilecutting greens, no increase in speed will result. However, a sudden Increase In speed will developwhen you actuate the lift pedal. For safety, use onlythe No. 1 position for cutting greens and the No. 2position for transport. Before MowingInspect the green for debris, remove the flag from thecup, and determine the best direction in which tomow. Base the direction to mow on the previousmowing direction. Always mow in an alternatepattern from the previous mowing, so that the grassblades will be less apt to lay down and becomedifficult to trap between the reel blades and bedknife.Mowing Procedures1. Approach the green with the shift selector in thenumber 1 position. Start on one edge of thegreen so the ribbon procedure of cutting may beused. This holds compaction to a minimum andleaves a neat, attractive pattern on the greens.Shift to the No. 1 position whenapproaching a green because machine speed willautomatically be reduced when the cutting unitsare engaged. Higher speed will resume when thecutting units are disengaged.2. Actuate the mow pedal as the front edge of thegrass baskets cross the outer edge of the green. This procedure drops the cutting units to the turfand starts the reels.NOTE: The No. 1 (rear) cutting unit reel will notstart until all the cutting units are on the groundand No. 2 and No. 3 cutting units are cutting.Remember that the No. 1 cuttingunit reel is delayed and therefore, you shouldpractice to gain the timing necessary to minimizethe clean-up mowing operation.3. Overlap a minimal amount with the previous cuton return passes. To maintain a straight lineacross the green and keep the machine an equaldistance from the edge of the previous cut, establish an imaginary sight line 2 to 3 metersahead of the machine to the edge of the uncutportion of the green (Fig. 21). Some people findit useful to include the outer edge of the steeringwheel as part of the sight line; i.e., keep thesteering wheel edge aligned with a point that isalways kept the same distance away from thefront of the machine (Fig. 21).ImportantImportantImportant312
