13Check the Engine OilThe engine is shipped with 1.7 liter (with filter) of oilin the crankcase; however, the level of oil must bechecked before and after you first start the engine.1. Position the machine on a level surface.2. Unscrew the dipstick and wipe it with a cleancloth. Screw the dipstick into the tube and makesure it is seated fully. Unscrew the dipstick andcheck the oil level. If it is low, remove the fillercap from the valve cover and add enough oil toraise the level to the FULL mark on the dipstick.Figure 81. Dipstick2. Fill Cap3. The engine uses any high-quality detergent oilhaving the American Petroleum Institute —API—service classification SC, SD, SE, SF orSG. Recommended viscosity (weight) is SAE30.4. Pour the oil into the opening in the valve coveruntil the oil level is up to the FULL mark on thedipstick. Add the oil slowly and check the leveloften during this process. DO NOT OVERFILL.Check the oil level every 8operating hours or daily. Initially change the oiland filter after the first 8 hours of operation; afterthat—under normal conditions—change the oilafter every 50 hours and the filter after every 100hours. However, change the oil more often whenyou operate the engine in extremely dusty ordirty conditions.5. Install the dipstick firmly in place.Fill the Gas TankTHE TORO COMPANY STRONGLYRECOMMENDS THE USE OF CLEAN, FRESHUNLEADED REGULAR GASOLINE IN TOROGASOLINE-POWERED PRODUCTS. UNLEADEDGASOLINE BURNS CLEANER, EXTENDSENGINE LIFE, AND PROMOTES GOODSTARTING BY REDUCING THE BUILD-UP OFCOMBUSTION CHAMBER DEPOSITS. LEADEDGASOLINE CAN BE USED IF UNLEADED ISNOT AVAILABLE.NOTE: Never use methanol, gasoline containingmethanol, gasohol containing more than 10% ethanol, gasoline additives, premium gasoline, or white gasbecause the engine fuel system damage could result.1. Fill the gasoline tank to the bottom of the fillerneck. DO NOT OVERFILL. Install the cap andtighten it securely in place.ImportantBefore OperatingBecause gasoline is flammable, use caution whenstoring or handling lt. Do not fill the fuel tankwhile the engine is running, or hot, or when themachine is in an enclosed area. Vapors maybuild up and be ignited by a spark or flamesource many feet away. DO NOT SMOKE whilefilling the fuel tank to prevent the possibility ofan explosion. Always fill the fuel tank outsideand wipe up any spilled gasoline before startingthe engine. Use a funnel or spout to preventspilling gasoline before starting the engine andfill the tank to about 1 inch from the top of thetank, not the filler neck. Store gasoline in a cleansafety-approved container and keep the cap inplace on the container. Keep gasoline in a cool,well-ventilated place—never in an enclosed areasuch as a hot storage shed. To assure volatility,do not buy more than a 30-day supply ofgasoline. Gasoline is a fuel for internalcombustion engines; therefore, do not use it forany other purpose. Since many children like thesmell of gas, keep it out of their reach because thefumes are explosive and dangerous to inhale.DANGER
