to the cutting edge, position A, of the blades(Figure 67). Note this dimension.Figure 671. Measure here from bladeto hard surface2. Position A4. Rotate the opposite ends of the blades forward.5. Measure from a level surface to the cutting edge ofthe blades at the same position as in step 3 above. The difference between the dimensions obtained insteps 3 and 4 must not exceed 1/8 inch (3 mm). Ifthis dimension exceeds 1/8 inch (3 mm), the bladeis bent and must be replaced; refer to Removing theBlades and Installing the Blades.WARNINGA blade that is bent or damaged could breakapart and could seriously injure or kill you orbystanders.• Always replace bent or damaged blade witha new blade.• Never file or create sharp notches in theedges or surfaces of blade.Removing the BladesBlades must be replaced if a solid object is hit, if theblade is out of balance or is bent. To ensure optimumperformance and continued safety conformance ofthe machine, use genuine Toro replacement blades.Replacement blades made by other manufacturers mayresult in nonconformance with safety standards.WARNINGContact with a sharp blade can cause serious injury.Wear gloves or wrap sharp edges of the blade witha rag.1. Hold the blade end using a rag or thickly-paddedglove.2. Remove the blade bolt, spring disk and blade fromthe spindle shaft (Figure 70).Sharpening the BladesWARNINGWhen sharpening blade, pieces of blade could bethrown and cause serious injury.Wear proper eye protection when sharpening blade.1. Use a file to sharpen the cutting edge at both endsof the blade (Figure 68). Maintain the original angle. The blade retains its balance if the same amount ofmaterial is removed from both cutting edges.Figure 681. Sharpen at original angle2. Check the balance of the blade by putting it on ablade balancer (Figure 69). If the blade stays in ahorizontal position, the blade is balanced and can beused. If the blade is not balanced, file some metal offthe end of the sail area only (Figure 70). Repeat thisprocedure until the blade is balanced.Figure 691. Blade 2. BalancerInstalling the Blades1. Install the blade onto the spindle shaft (Figure 70).Important: The curved part of the blade mustbe pointing upward toward the inside of themower to ensure proper cutting.2. Install the spring disk and blade bolt. The springdisk cone must be installed toward the bolt head(Figure 70). Torque the blade bolt to 85-110 ft-lb(115-150 N-m).50
