11CHECK THE ENGINE OIL (Fig. 1)The engine is shipped with 1.7 1 of oil. However, checkthe oil level before and after you first start the engine.1. Position the machine on a level surface.2. Unscrew the dipstick and wipe it with a clean cloth.Screw the dipstick into the tube and make sure it isseated fully. Unscrew the dipstick and check the oillevel. If it is low, remove the filler cap and add oil.Use any high-quality detergent oil having theAmerican Petroleum Institute—API—”serviceclassification” SE, SF or SG. Recommendedviscosity (weight) is SAE 30. Refer to the EngineOperator’s Manual for additional information.Figure 11. Dipstick2. Filler cap3. Pour the oil into opening in the valve cover until theoil level is up to the ”FULL’” mark on the dipstick.Add the oil slowly and check the level often duringthis process. DO NOT OVERFILL.IMPORTANT Check the oil level every 8operating hours or daily. Initially, change the oilafter the first 8 hours of operation; thereafter, under normal conditions, change the oil every 50hours and filter every 100 hours. However, change it more often when operating the enginein extremely dusty or dirty conditions.5. Install the filler cap and the dipstick.FILL THE FUEL TANKTHE TORO COMPANY STRONGLY RECOMMENDSTHE USE OF CLEAN, FRESH UNLEADEDREGULAR GASOLINE IN TORO GASOLINEPOWERED PRODUCTS. UNLEADED GASOLINEBURNS CLEANER, EXTENDS ENGINE LIFE, ANDPROMOTES GOOD STARTING BY REDUCING THEBUILD-UP OF COMBUSTION CHAMBERDEPOSITS. LEADED GASOLINE CAN BE USED IFUNLEADED IS NOT AVAILABLE.NOTE: NEVER USE METHANOL, GASOLINECONTAINING METHANOL, GASOHOLCONTAINING MORE THAN 10% ETHANOL,GASOLINE ADDITIVES, PREMIUM GASOLINE, ORWHITE GAS BECAUSE ENGINE FUEL SYSTEMDAMAGE COULD RESULT.Before OperatingBecause gasoline is flammable, caution must beused when storing or handling it. Do not fill thefuel tank while the engine is running, hot or whenthe machine is in an enclosed area. Vapors maybuild up and be ignited by a spark or flame sourcemany feet away. DO NOT SMOKE while fillingthe fuel tank to prevent the possibility of anexplosion. Always fill the fuel tank outside andwipe up any spilled gasoline before starting theengine. Use a funnel or spout to prevent spillinggasoline before starting the engine and fill thetank to about 3 cm from the top of the tank, notthe filler neck. Store gasoline in a clean safety-approved container and keep the cap in place onthe container. Keep gasoline in a cool, well-ventilated place; never in an enclosed area such asa hot storage shed. To assure volatility, do not buymore than a 30-day supply of gasoline. Gasolineis a fuel for internal combustion engines;therefore, do not use it for any other purpose.Since many children like the smell of gas, keep itout of their reach because the fumes are explosiveand dangerous to inhale.DANGER12
