17Getting StartedIMPORTANT NOTE:Caution for optical digital audio outputconnector:• When connecting an amplifier (with an opticaldigital input connector) which does not containthe Dolby Digital or dts decoder, be sure toselect “PCM” at “Dolby Digital” and “PCM” at “dts”in the Settings for DVD Operation “SelectingAUDIO OUTPUT” (see pages 56-57). Otherwise,any attempt to play DVDs may cause such a highlevel of noise that it may be harmful to your earsand damage your speakers.• Be sure to refer to pages 56-57 regarding outputsettings of Dolby Digital, dts, and PCM.• CDs can be played as usual.Notes on audio output from the opticaldigital audio output connectorEnjoying digital audio output from thedigital audio output connector* 1 The type of audio output from the connector canbe selected by adjusting the Settings for DVDOperation. Supporting 5.1-channelsurround sound, as well as stereo (2-channel)sound, this technique enables a large quantity ofsound data to be efficiently recorded on a disc.• Linear PCM is a signal recording format used inCDs. While CDs are recorded in 44.1 kHz/16 bit,DVDs are recorded in 48 kHz/16 bit up to96 kHz/24 bit.• If you have a Dolby Pro Logic Surround decoder,you will obtain the full benefit of Pro Logic fromthe same DVD movies that provide full 5.1channel Dolby Digital soundtracks, as well asfrom titles with the Dolby Surround mark.
