Chapter 3. Recovery informationThis chapter will help you get familiar with recovery solutions provided byLenovo. This chapter explains when and how to use the following recoverymethods:v Creating and using Product Recovery discsv Performing backup and recovery operationsv Using the Rescue and Recovery workspacev Creating and using rescue mediav Creating and using a Recovery Repair diskettev Recovering or installing device driversv Setting a rescue device in the startup sequencev Solving recovery problemsNote: There are a variety of methods to choose from when considering how torecover software in the event of a software or hardware-related problem.Some methods vary depending on the type of your operating system.Creating and using Product Recovery discsIf your computer is equipped with a recordable CD or DVD drive, you can create aset of Product Recovery discs that enable you to restore the contents of the harddisk drive to the factory-installed state. Product Recovery discs are useful if youtransfer the computer to another area, sell the computer, recycle the computer, oras a last resort to put the computer in an operational state after all other methodsof recovery have failed. As a precautionary measure, it is important to create a setof Product Recovery discs as early as possible.Note: The recovery operations you can perform using Product Recovery discs varydepending on the operating system from which they were created. YourMicrosoft Windows license permits you to create only one set of ProductRecovery discs, so it is important that you store the discs in a safe placeafter you have made them.To create Product Recovery discs, do the following:1. From the Windows desktop, click Start → All Programs → ThinkVantage →Create Product Recovery Media.2. Follow the instructions on the screen.The following list explains how to use Product Recovery discs on differentoperating systems:v Windows XP: use Product Recovery discs to restore your computer to thefactory-installed contents, perform a custom factory recovery, or perform otherrescue and recovery operations such as rescuing individual files.v Windows Vista: use Product Recovery discs to restore your computer to thefactory-installed contents only.When using Product Recovery discs on Windows XP, you are given the option toenter the Rescue and Recovery workspace and choose from a variety of recoveryoperations.
