5ReferenceTurning On/OffTurning the GPS V On (and Off)Before turning the GPS V on, find a suitable location for its use. If you are operat-ing the GPS V indoors, with the “Use Indoors” option, location is not critical. However,during actual navigation use the GPS V should be outside—or on the dashboard ofyour car—where the detachable antenna has a clear view of the sky. Rotate the antennaso it is pointing upward, perpendicular to the ground.To turn the GPS V on, press and hold the red POWER key.The Welcome Page will appear while the unit conducts a self-test. Once testing iscomplete, the Welcome Page is replaced by a MapSource Information Page. This pagelists any maps currently loading in the GPS V’s memory. The MapSource InformationPage appears briefly and is replaced by a Warning Page, then the Satellite Status Page.(You may press ENTER to move quickly past the MapSource Information and/orWarning Pages.)Once a sufficient number of satellites have been located, a “Ready to Navigate”message will appear at the top of the Satellite Status Page. If no keys have been pressedduring the power-up process, the GPS V will automatically sequence from the SatelliteStatus Page to the Map Page and show your current position.To turn the GPS V off, press and hold the red power key.The Welcome Page. While this page is beingdisplayed, the GPS V is conducting a self-test.The Warning Page. Press ENTER toacknowledge this page.
