By usingan almanac (a timetable of satellite numbers and theirorbits) stored in the receiver’s memory, the GPS 120XLcan determine the distance and position of any GPSsatellite and then use this information to determineyour position. To obtain this almanac data, your GPS receiverneeds to be initialized -- or given the opportunity to“find itself”-- the very first time it is turned on. Onceyou have initialized the unit, the GPS 120XL will com-pute future fixes more rapidly, usually in a fewminutes.Remember that initializing the unit is only neces-sary under the following conditions:• First-time use from the factory• If the receiver has been moved over 500 milesfrom the last calculated position with power off• If the receiver’s memory has been cleared and allstored data has been lost5Welcome PageThe welcome page willappear as soon as the GPS120XL is turned on andremain while the unit con-ducts a brief self-test.GETTINGSTARTEDInitialization
