.fMeasurethe plug gap with a feelergauge.Correctas necessaryby bendingsideelectrode.See Fig. 29.The gap shouldbe set tobetween0.024-0.031in.Electrode4.5.Figure29Checkthatthe sparkplug washeris in good conditionand threadthe sparkplug in by handto preventcross-threading.After thespark plug is seated,tightenwith a spark plugwrenchtocompressthe washer.NOTE: Wheninstallinga newsparkplug,tighten 1/2turn afterthe sparkplug seatsto compressthe washer.Whenreinstallingausedspark plug,tighten1/8-1/4turnafter the spark plugseatstocompressthe washer.IMPORTANT: The sparkplug mustbe securelytightened.Animproperlytightenedspark plugcan becomevery hotand maydamagethe engine.Fuel Filter ServiceGasolineand its vaporsare extremelyflammableand explosive.Fireor explosioncan cause severeburnsor death.• Keepgasolineawayfrom sparks,open flames,pilotlights,heat,and otherignitionsources.• Checkfuellines, tank,cap, and fittingsfrequentlyfor cracksorleaks.Replaceif necessary.• Beforereplacingthe fuel filter,drain the fueltank as in ToDrainthe Fuel.• Do notdrain fuel whentheengine ishot. Allowtheengineadequatetime to cool. Drainfuel intoan approvedcontaineroutdoors,awayfromopen flame.• Drainany largevolumeof fuelfrom the tank by disconnectingthefuelline from the in-linefuel filter near theengine.• Removethefuel line from the In-lineside (sidetowardsthe fueltank) of thefuel filter.• Replacementparts mustbe the same and installedin the samepositionas the originalparts.• If fuelspills,wait until itevaporatesbeforestartingengine.• Beforereplacingthe fuel filter,drain the fueltank. Otherwise,fuelcan leakoutand causea fireor explosion.To DrainThe Fuel:1. Locatethe fuelfilter,whichisroutedon theleftsideof theenginebetweenthefuel tankand thecarburetor,and may be attachedtothe enginewitha tie strap.Cutthe tie strap,ifpresent,thenpinchthe in-lineclampon the fuelfilterwitha pair ofpliers,slidetheclampup the fuelline.Pullthefuel linefreefromthe filterandplacethe openend ofthe lineintoan approvedcontainerto drainthe fuel.To ChangeThe FuelFilter:2. Usepliersto squeezethetabs on the otherclamp(the out-linesideof the fuelfilter),and slidetheclamp awayfrom thefuel filter.Twistand pull the fuel line off of the fuel filter.See Fig. 30.3. Checkthe fuel linesforcracks or leaks.Replaceifnecessary.4. Replacethefuel filterwith an originalequipmentreplacementfilter.Call1-800-4-MY-HOME®to purchasethe originalequipmentreplacementfilter.Securethe fuellineswith the clamps..The fuelfilter cannot be cleanedand shouldbe replacedevery 100operatinghours; moreoftenif run with old gasoline.FuelFilter /TabFuel Line\ \Figure30Clean EngineIf theenginehasbeenrunning,allowit tocool forat leasthalfan hourbeforecleaning.Periodicallyremovedirtbuild-upfromengine.Cleantheenginecoolingfinsevery25 hours.Cleanwitha brushor compressedair.IMPORTANT: Do notspray enginewith waterto cleanbecausewa-ter couldcontaminatefuel. Usinga garden hoseor pressurewashingequipmentcan alsoforce waterinto theair cleaneror muffleropening.Waterin the air cleanerwill soak the paperelement,and waterthatpassesthroughthe elementor mufflercanenterthe cylinder,causingdamage.Accumulationof debrisaroundmufflercouldcausea fire.
