Chapter 1 Before Use 15■ Never place small metal objects such as staples,paper clips, or jewelry on the scanner. These itemsmay fall into the scanner, and cause a fire orelectric shock. Should such objects ever fall insidethe scanner, immediately turn the power OFF, anddisconnect the power plug from the power outlet.Then, contact your local authorized Canon dealeror service representative to have the unit serviced.■ Do not install the scanner in a humid or dustylocation. Doing so may result in a fire or electricshock.■ Do not place objects on top of the scanner, as theymay tip over and fall, resulting in personal injury.■ Do not use the scanner with a power supplyvoltage other than 120/220-240 VAC. Doing somight cause fire or electric shock.■ When disconnecting the power cord, grasp it firmlyby its plug. Do not pull directly on the power cord,as this may damage or expose the cord’s internalwiring, resulting in a fire or electric shock.■ Leave sufficient space around the power plug sothat it can be disconnected easily. If objects areplaced around the power plug, you will be unableto disconnect it in an emergency.■ Do not allow water or flammable substances(alcohol, paint thinner, benzene, etc.) to spill intothe scanner, as this may result in a fire or electricshock.■ Turn OFF the power for safety when not using thescanner for a long period of time, such asovernight. Also, turn OFF the power, anddisconnect the AC adapter from the scanner anddisconnect the power cord from the power outletfor safety when the machine will not be used for anextended period of time, such as duringconsecutive holidays.■ Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry that may getcaught in the scanner while you are using it. Thismay result in personal injury. Be extra careful ofneckties and long hair. If anything becomes caughtin the scanner, immediately disconnect the powercord to stop the scanner.■ Be careful when placing paper in the scanner andwhen removing jammed paper. It is possible to cutyour hand on the edge of a sheet of paper.❏ Disposal● Prior to disposing of the scanner, initialize thescanner to ensure that the registered data isdeleted.● When disposing of the scanner, make sure tofollow all local ordinances and laws or consult withthe retailer who sold you the scanner.
