Metal HeatThickness Setting5Model WF2010If heating, welding, orcutting materials that aregalvanized, zinc plated, lead, or cadmium platedrefer to the General Safety InformationSection for instructions. Extremelytoxic fumes are created when thesemetals are heated.4. Connect the work clamp to thework piece or workbench (if metal).Make sure the contact is secure.Avoid surfaces with paint, varnish, corrosion, or non-metallic materials.5. Position the Heat Selector on thefront panel to the desired setting.NOTE: These settings are generalguidelines only. Heat setting may varyaccording to welding conditions andmaterials.6. Rotate the Wire Speed Control tosetting number 5 to start with, thenadjust as needed after test weld.7. Plug the input cord into a propervoltage receptacle with propercircuit capacity. (See Chart undercircuit requirements on page 1).8. Switch the welder ON/OFF switch tothe ON position.9. Verify that the wire is extended1/4” from the contact tip. If not, squeeze the trigger to feedadditional wire, release the trigger, and cut wire to proper length.10. Position the wire feed gun near thework piece, lower the weldinghelmet by nodding the head, orposition the hand shield, andsqueeze the gun trigger. Adjust heatsetting and wire speed as needed.11. When finished welding, turn welderoff and store properly.! WARNING Disconnect powersupply and turnmachine off before inspecting orservicing any components. Keep the wirecompartment cover closed at all timesunless the wire needs replacement. Before every use:1. Check condition of weld cables andimmediately repair or replace anycables with damaged insulation.2. Check condition of power cord andimmediately repair or replace anycord if damaged.3. Inspect the condition of the gun tipand nozzle. Remove any weld slag.Replace gun tip or nozzle ifdamaged.Do not operate thiswelding machinewith cracked or missing insulation onwelding cables, wire feed gun, orpower cord.Every 3 months:1. Replace any unreadable safetylabels on the welder.2. Use compressed air to blow all dustand lint from the ventilationopenings.3. Clean the wire groove on the driveroll. Remove wire from the feedmechanism, remove screws fromthe drive roll housing. Use a smallwire brush to clean the drive roll.Replace if worn or damaged.Consumable and Wear PartsThe following parts require routinemaintenance:• Wire feed drive roller• Gun liner - replace if worn• Nozzle/contact tips• Wire - This welder will accept either4” or 8” diameter spools. Flux-coredwelding wire is susceptible to moistureand oxidizes over time, so it isimportant to select a spool size thatwill be used within approximately 6months. Use AWS type AWS E71T-GSor E71T-11, .030" (.8mm) or .035"(.9mm) diameter.Call (800) 746-5641for replacement parts! WARNING! WARNINGOperation (Con’t)14-20 Gauge LowThicker than 14 Gauge HighMaintenance Welding GuidelinesGeneralThis line of welding machines utilizesthe Flux Cored Arc Welding (Gasless)process. The weld must be protected(shielded) from contaminates in the airwhile it is molten. The gasless processuses a tubular wire with a flux materialinside. The flux creates a shielding gaswhen melted. When current is produced by atransformer (welding machine) andflows through the circuit to the weldwire, an arc is formed between the endof the weld wire and the work piece. This arc melts the wire and the workpiece. The melted metal of the weldwire flows into the molten crater andforms a bond with the work piece asshown (Figure 7).Arc Welding BasicsFive basic techniques affect weldquality. These are: wire selection, heatsetting, weld angle, wire speed, andtravel speed. An understanding ofthese techniques is necessary foreffective welds.HEAT SETTINGThe correct heat involves theadjustment of the welding machine tothe required setting. The heat settingused depends on the thickness of thework piece. Consult specifications listedon the welder. It is suggested that thewelder practice with scrap metal toadjust settings, and compare weldswith Figure 12.SlagWeld WireFluxWork PieceContactTipCraterNozzleFigure 7 - Weld Componentswww.chpower.com
