2 Product overview2.1 Introduction to motor units and gear unitsProduct overviewThe motor units and gear units function as external axes in the IRC5 system. Theyare controlled by drive units mounted in the IRC5 controller. The units are designedfor optimal performance, installation, and application.The motor units and gear units use much of the same components and are thereforedescribed together.SMB boxThe SMB box (optional) contains a serial measurement board (with battery backup)and brake release buttons (optional).Note that if the motor unit is used in an arc welding station, the SMB box mustalways be insulated from the weld circuit. See Insulation in arc welding stationson page 64.Axis selectorThe axis selector (optional) is mounted inside the IRC5 controller and makes itpossible to cut the power for selected connected external units.
