Initial InstallationEN 4161.758.102q – 2017-09 294.6 Lubrication4.6.1 Splash lubricationThe B5 standard version of the gearbox has splashlubrication.Splash lubrication is suitable for intermittentoperation. Frequent gear shifts, differentspeeds and downtimes, such as thoseencountered when changing tools, areassumed.Possible damage to gearbox due to insufficientoil quantity and/or running dry. Fill gearbox oil up to center of oil level gageglass. The actual oil level is binding for the amount of oilto add. The number of liters stated on the modelplate for the relevant gearbox is a reference value. If the gearbox is installed at an angle, which maybe the case with certain belt tensioning equip-ment, an oil level tube with calibration mark mustbe fitted in place of the oil level gage glass.Ensure the same oil level as that obtained whenthe gearbox is installed horizontally (also refer toinstallation drawing). An oil sensor can occasionally be used tocheck the oil level before starting themachine. The oil sensor can be screwedinto connections D or E (figure, page 31) ofthe gearbox housing. (Oil sensor order no.4161.298.045, Balluff data sheet availableon request)4.6.2 Recirculating lubricationTwo connecting pieces (hose fittings) withM42x1.5 and M22x1.5 thread are optionalaccessories, order no. 4161.106.016.Recirculating lubrication enables efficient gearboxlubrication and cooling. This improves thegearboxes performance and less heat isintroduced into the machine.Gearbox failure due to insufficient lubrication. Gearboxes in the V1 vertical and V3 verticalinstallation positions must be operated withrecirculating lubrication. In the 2K250/2K300 gearboxes, the V1 verticaland V3 vertical installation positions requirerecirculating lubrication. The type of recirculatinglubrication depends on the operating temperaturelevel required.Because of the centrifugal forces acting on the oil, there may be insufficient lubrication at the gearingif operated continually in direct drive.Occasionally changing gear (ratio) and thenstarting the motor (nMot =1,000 rpm) feeds oil tothe gearing and prevents the gearing from beingloaded on the one side linked to the selectedposition. Some applications require a very low operatingtemperature level which can be obtained byconnecting a gearbox oil supply with oil coolingspecifically designed for this purpose. The relevantgearbox versions are prepared accordingly. To achieve ideal gearbox cooling withoutinfluencing lubrication, various connectors areavailable for recirculating lubrication on thegearbox depending on the installation position andmode of operation. The figures on page 31 show the oil inlet andoutlet points on the gearbox. The precisemeasurements can be found on the respectiveinstallation drawings. After initial operation, the oil level must be in thecenter of the oil level gage glass, top up oil ifrequired. The pump, oil tank and heat exchangercomponents must be positioned below thegearbox oil level. If the oil return isconnected according to Chap. 4.6.3.2,limp-home (emergency control)characteristics are assured.
