26Conventional video cassette recorders have required tapes to record, while this recorder enablesrecording on a DVD-RAM/R/RW disc whenever you want, without selecting an available tape andconfirming a point to start a recording from.Further, if you use DVD-RAM discs, you can collect necessary scenes and store them in it to makeyour own video library.Is your DVD recorder ready?Before recording a TV program on this recorder,insure that channels you want to record are correctlytuned in on this recorder.If not tuned in, read the separate “INSTALLATIONGUIDE” volume again, and confirm all the necessaryconnections and settings have been done.Also, insure the clock is set precisely for programrecording. Set the clock using the Initial Settings menu( page 30, INSTALLATION GUIDE).Disc initializingWhenever you use a new DVD-RAM/RW disc on thisrecorder, be sure to initialize the disc. For DVD-RAMdisc, initialization is indispensable to the databasesystem of this recorder.DVD-R discs can be used on this recorder withoutinitializing.For details of initialization of DVD-RAM/RW discs, seepage 28.If an initialized DVD-RAM disc is still unusable, it maybecome usable by executing “DVD-RAM PhysicalFormat” in the Initial Settings menu.For “DVD-RAM Physical Format”, see page 29.Note on recording on a DVD-RAM discConfirm disc compatibility and prepare an availableDVD-RAM disc to record on ( page 6, 8).Some discs may need to be formatted for use on thisrecorder. A message will appear asking you to executedisc formatting. Follow the procedure displayed on-screen to format the DVD-RAM disc compatible withthis recorder.Some DVD-RAM discs formatted on a PC may not beusable.Note• This recorder records on a DVD-RAM disc if it complieswith DVD-RAM standard Version 2.0 or 2.1. However, youmay not record on some DVD-RAM discs that havecomplicated contents (often, to protect the recorded data).When you select a DVD-RAM discs that has already beenrecorded, check that the disc is suitable for recording or theremaining time of the disc is displayed. It is recommendedto use a new DVD-RAM disc for an important recording.Note on recording on a DVD-RW discConfirm disc compatibility and prepare an availableDVD-RW disc to record on ( page 6, 9).Some discs may need to be initialized for use on therecorder. A message will appear asking you to executedisc initializing. Follow the procedure displayed on-screen for initialize the DVD-RW disc compatible withthis recorder.Some DVD-RW discs initialized on a PC may not beusable.To play a DVD-RW disc recorded on this recorder onother devices, finalize the DVD-RW disc on thisrecorder. ( page 106)The finalization disables the disc’s rewritability. Torewrite a finalized DVD-RW disc, cancel thefinalization. ( page 109).• On DVD-RW discs recorded on other devices, youcannot execute DVD-Video finalize process orcancel the finalize process, or add recordings onthis recorder.• You cannot rewrite or edit a DVD-RW disc ifrecorded in DVD-VR mode.• DVD-RW discs which are recorded on otherdevices and not finalized yet, cannot be read on thisrecorder. Do not rush to initialization. Check that thecontents can be erased or not.RecordingBefore recordingPlease be sure to read this critical background information prior to making a recording.
