MaintenanceNote: Determine the left and right sides of the machine from the normal operating position.Recommended Maintenance Schedule(s)Maintenance ServiceInterval Maintenance ProcedureAfter the first 5 hours • Change the engine oil.Before each use or daily• Ensure that the engine shuts off within 3 seconds after releasing theoperator-presence bail.• Check the engine-oil level.After each use • Clean grass clippings and dirt from the entire machine.Every 100 hours • Check the spark plug and replace it if necessary.Yearly• Replace the cutting line.• Replace the air filter; replace it more frequently in dusty operating conditions.• Change the engine oil.Maintenance Safety• Shut off the engine, remove the key (if equipped),and wait for all movement to stop before you leavethe operator’s position. Allow the machine to coolbefore adjusting, servicing, cleaning, or storing it.• Disconnect the spark-plug wire from the spark plugbefore performing any maintenance procedure.• Wear gloves and eye protection when servicingthe machine.• Examine the machine regularly and replace anyworn or damaged parts. Use only the cuttingelements that are suitable for use at the operatingspeed of the machine.• Never tamper with safety devices. Check theirproper operation regularly.• Tipping the machine may cause the fuel to leak.Fuel is flammable and explosive, and can causepersonal injury. Run the engine dry or remove thefuel with a hand pump; never siphon the fuel.• Keep all fasteners tight to ensure that the machineis in safe working condition.• Do not change the engine governor setting oroverspeed the engine.• To ensure optimum performance of the machine,use only genuine Toro replacement parts andaccessories. Replacement parts and accessoriesmade by other manufacturers could be dangerous,and such use could void the product warranty.Preparing for MaintenanceWARNINGTipping the machine may cause the fuel toleak. Fuel is flammable, explosive and cancause personal injury.Run the engine dry or remove the fuel with ahand pump; never siphon.Important: Always tip the machine onto its sidewith the dipstick aligned down. If the machine istipped with the dipstick aligned up, oil may fill thevalve train—requiring at least 30 minutes to drain.1. Shut off the engine and wait for all moving partsto stop.2. Move the machine to a level surface.3. Disconnect the spark-plug wire from the sparkplug (Figure 32).18
