raise the reels (This will help prevent dribbling grassonto the green while raising the reels).7. Empty the grass baskets of all clippings beforetransporting to the next green. Heavy wet clippingsplace an undue strain on the baskets and will addunnecessary weight to the machine, thereby increasingthe load on the engine, hydraulic system, brakes, etc.Transport OperationMake sure the cutting units are in the full up position. Movethe functional control lever to the transport position. Usethe brakes to slow the machine while going down steephills to avoid loss of control. Always approach rough areasat a reduced speed and cross severe undulations carefully.Familiarize yourself with the width of the machine. Do notattempt to pass between objects that are close together sothat costly damage and down time can be prevented.Inspection and Cleanup AfterMowingAt the completion of the mowing operation, thoroughly washthe machine with a garden hose without a nozzle so excessivewater pressure will not cause contamination and damage toseals and bearings. Never wash a warm engine or electricalconnections with water. After cleaning, it is recommended the machine be inspectedfor possible hydraulic fluid leaks and damage or wear tohydraulic and mechanical components. The cutting unitsshould be checked for sharpness. Also, lubricate the tractionpedal and brake shaft assembly with SAE 30W oil or spraylubricant to deter corrosion and help keep the machineperforming satisfactorily during the next mowing operation.Towing the MachineIn case of an emergency the machine can be towed for a shortdistance (less than 1/4 mile (0.4 km)). However, Toro doesnot recommend this as standard procedure.Important: Do not tow the machine faster than 2-3MPH (3-5 km/h) because the drive system may bedamaged. If the machine must be moved a considerabledistance, transport it on a truck or trailer.1. Locate the bypass valve on the pump and rotate it sothat the slot is vertical (Figure 42).g0146271Figure 421. Bypass valve—slot shown in closed (horizontal) position2. Before starting the engine, close the bypass valve byrotating it so that the slot is horizontal (Figure 42). Donot start the engine when the valve is open.33
