288. If the machine accelerates slowly, and the front casterwheels do not lift off the ground, the machine is tooun–responsive. Adjustment is required.Adjusting the By–pass ValveThe by–pass valve should be adjusted to deliver bestperformance for the size (weight) mower you have. Theby–pass valve factory setting is 1/2 turn out.The following values can be used as initial settings fordifferent size mowers:52 inch 1/2 turn out44 inch 1 turn out37 inch 1–1/6 turn out36 inch 1–1/6 turn out1. Loosen large jam nut several turns (Fig. 32).2. Gently close by–pass valve (Fig. 32).Important Do not over–tighten valve or needle andseat may be damaged. Do not exceed 50 inch pounds toclose valve.3. Open by–pass valve 1/2 turn (Fig. 32).4. Tighten jam nut to lock the adjustment (Fig. 32).5. Repeat the Test Procedure to check for properoperation.Important By–pass valve adjustment is very sensitive,do not adjust more than 1/6 turn (one flat) at a time.6. If the machine is too aggressive or tends to jumpforward, the valve needs to be opened further.7. If the machine is slow to respond, the valve needs to beclosed further.8. Repeat the Test Procedure to check for properoperation. Re-adjust the by–pass valves until properperformance is achieved.1m–309812Figure 321. By-pass valve 2.
