Referservicing to qualified personnelonly.• Should any solid object or liquidfall into the player, unplug theplayer, and have it checked byqualified personnel beforeoperating it any further.Cleaning the cabinet• Clean the cabinet, panel andcontrols with a soft cloth slightlymoistened with a mild detergentsolution. Do not use any type ofabrasive pad, scouring powder, orsolvent, such as alcohol orbenzine.On power sources• For AC operation, use thesupplied AC power cord; do notuse any other type.• The player is not disconnectedfrom the AC power source(mains) as long as it is connectedto the wall outlet, even if theplayer itself has been turned off.• Unplug the player from the walloutlet when it is not to be used foran extended period of time.• For battery operation, use six sizeD (R20) batteries.• When the batteries are not to beused, remove them to avoiddamage that can be caused bybattery leakage or corrosion.• The nameplate indicatingoperating voltage, powerconsumption, etc. is located at thebottom.On placement• Do not leave the player in alocation near heat sources, or in aplace subject to direct sunlight,excessive dust or mechanicalshock.• Do not place the player on aninclined or unstable place.• Do not place anything within 10mm of the side of the cabinet. Theventilation holes must beunobstructed for the player tooperate properly and prolong thelife of its components.• If the player is left in a car parkedin the sun, be sure to choose alocation in the car where theplayer will not be subjected to thedirect rays of the sun.• Since a strong magnet is used forthe speakers, keep personal creditcards using magnetic coding orspring-wound watches away fromthe player to prevent possibledamage from the magnet.On operation• If the player is brought directlyfrom a cold to a warm location, oris placed in a very damp room,moisture may condense on thelenses inside the CD playersection. Should this occur, theplayer will not operate properly.In this case, remove the CD andwait about an hour for themoisture to evaporate.• If the player has not been used fora long time, set it in the playbackmode to warm it up for a fewminutes before inserting acassette.Notes on cassettes• Break off the cassette tab fromside A or B to prevent accidentalrecording. If you want to reuse thetape for recording, cover thebroken tab with adhesive tape.• The use of a cassette with morethan 90 minutes of play time is notrecommended except for long,continuous recording or playbackNotes on CDs• Before playing,clean the CD with acleaning cloth. Wipethe CD from thecenter out.• Do not use solventssuch as benzine,thinner, commercially availablecleaners or anti-static sprayintended for vinyl LPs.• Do not expose the CD to directsunlight or heat sources such ashot air ducts, nor leave it in a carparked in direct sunlight as therecan be a considerable rise intemperature inside the car.• Do not stick paper or sticker onthe CD, nor scratch the surface ofthe CD.• After playing, store the CD in itscase.If there is a scratch, dirt orfingerprints on the CD, it may causetracking error.If you have any questions orproblems concerning your player,please consult your nearest Sonydealer.TroubleshootingGeneralThe power does not come on.• Connect the AC power cordsecurely.• Make sure the batteries areinserted correctly.• Replace all the batteries with newones if they are weak.There is no audio.• Make sure the FUNCTIONselector is set to the function youwant to operate.• Adjust the volume.• Unplug the headphones whenlistening through speakers.Noise is heard.• Someone is using a portabletelephone or other equipment thatemits radio waves near the player.tMove the portable telephone,etc., away from the player.RadioThe audio is weak or has poorquality.• Replace all the batteries with newones if they are weak.• Move the player away from the TV.The picture of your TV becomesunstable.• If you are listening to an FMprogram near the TV with anindoor antenna, move the playeraway from the TV.CD PlayerThe CD does not play or “00”lights in the display even when aCD is in place.• Make sure that the CDcompartment is closed.• Place the CD with the labelsurface up.• Clean the CD.• Take out the CD and leave the CDcompartment open for about anhour to dry moisture condensation.• Make sure the FUNCTIONselector is set to CD.The sound drops out.• Reduce the volume.• Clean the CD, or replace it if theCD is badly damaged.• Place the player in a location freefrom vibration.• Clean the lens with acommercially available blower.• The sound may drop out or noisemay be heard if the CD is recordedusing a personal computer(CD-R,etc.).Tape PlayerThe tape does not move when youpress an operation button.• Close the cassette compartmentsecurely.The REC z button does notfunction or the tape does not playor record.• Make sure the safety tab on thecassette is in place.• Make sure the FUNCTIONselector is set to CD, AM or FM.Poor or distorted playback,recording or erasing quality.• Clean the heads, pinch roller andcapstan with a cleaning swabslightly moistened with cleaningfluid or alcohol.• Replace all the batteries with newones if they are weak.• TYPE II (high position) or TYPEIV (metal) tape is being used. UseTYPE I (normal) tape only.• Demagnetize the heads using acommercially available tape headdemagnetizer.After trying the above remedies, ifyou still have problems, unplug theAC power cord and remove all thebatteries. After all the indications inthe display disappear, plug thepower cord and insert the batteriesagain.
