HEALTH AND SAFETY72Responsible ListeningCaution! Avoid potential hearing loss.Damage to hearing occurs when a person is exposedto loud sounds over time. The risk of hearing lossincreases as sound is played louder and for longerdurations. Prolonged exposure to loud sounds(including music) is the most common cause ofpreventable hearing loss. Some scientific researchsuggests that using portable audio devices, suchas portable music players and cell phones, at highvolume settings for long durations may lead topermanent noise-induced hearing loss. This includes the use of headphones (includingheadsets, earbuds, and Bluetooth® or other wirelessdevices). Exposure to very loud sound has also beenassociated in some studies with tinnitus (a ringingin the ear), hypersensitivity to sound, and distortedhearing. Individual susceptibility to noise-inducedhearing loss and potential hearing problem varies.Additionally, the amount of sound produced bya portable audio device varies depending on thenature of the sound, the device settings, and theheadphones that are used.cricket_GSIII_QRM.indd 72 10/26/2012 2:46:06 PM
