Part 1: Site Survey and Overview of DECT Systems17Example 4: ShadowsIf Base Stations are placed on pillars ofconcrete or steel (e.g. in warehouseswith steel shelves or racking), shadowsmay appear with no radio coverage. Thismay be solved by covering the shadowareas with one or more additional BaseStations.Using RepeatersIntroductionA Repeater is used to extend DECT coverage. It is not a real Base Station and doesnot increase the number of DECT traffic channels but it can give a larger physicalspreading of traffic channels and thereby extend the radio service of the traffic chan-nels established with real Base StationsThe normal method of establishing multi-cell installations is to make pre-installationsite surveys to map the coverage and determine the number and location of BaseStations. After the system is installed and tested, gaps in the coverage may be found,or different coverage may be required, often in areas with limited traffic such asbasements, lofts or outdoor areas. To increase the number of Base Stations requires further installation work. In suchcases the Repeater is ideal because it is not physically connected to the DECT sys-tem and, therefore, is easier to work with.No radio coverage – shadowSteel shelves/racking No coverage - shadows
