77. Setup and adjustmentsGeneral note:Setup and adjustment work mayonly be carried out after themachine is protected againstaccidental starting by pulling themains plug.7.1 Wrapping abrasive stripsDisconnect the machine from thepower source (pull mains plug).Raise the clip lever (D, Fig 6) on theleft (outboard) side of the drum.Fig 6Insert the abrasive strip (E) so that ituses most of the width of the slot andrelease the clip lever.Wrap the strip around the drum, beingcareful not to overlap the windings(Fig 7).Fig 7Insert the tapered end into the inboardtake-up fastener (Fig 8) and releasethe clip lever.Fig 8The take-up fastener is designed toautomatically take up any slackcaused by stretching of the abrasivestrip.Note: Position the strip with enoughspace to the inside of the slot (Fig 9)to allow it to be pulled into the drumas needed.Fig 9The abrasive strip may stretch in use;a rising of the take-up lever clampingposition (Fig 10) may becomenecessary when it contacts the drumground.Fig 10Make sure that the sanding paper isrunning clear after every setup oradjustment done.TUF Tool:To ease the abrasive strip insertion aTUF Tool (Take-Up Fastener Tool) issupplied with each machine.Insert the hook into the outside hole inthe end of the take-up lever of thefastener.Fig 11Lift the lever with the TUF Tool, pulling the lever up until it touches theinside of the drum, turn counter-clockwise and clamp the sandingpaper.Fig 12Insert the tapered end of the abrasivestrip.Release the lever on its properposition.Always remove TUF Tool from themachine.7.2 Selecting drum abrasivesIt is important to select the proper gritof abrasives for the type of sandingbeing performed to achieve maximumsanding results.First begin sanding with coarser grit, then progressively work towards finergrits.Never jump more than one grit grade.Grits that are too fine and wornsanding paper can burnish the wood.Grit 36: Stock and glue removal.Grit 60: Surfacing and dimensioning.
