Use an accuratepool thermometer. A difference of 4°F (2°C),between 78°F and 82°F (26°C and 28°C), will use asmuch as 40% more gas.• Carefully monitor the water temperature of your poolin the summertime. You can reduce heater usage dueto warmer air temperatures.• Find the proper setting on the pool heater temperaturecontrol and use the Set Point Lockout feature todiscourage further adjustments.• Set the pump time clock to start the pump no earlierthan 6:00 AM. This is the time when nightly heat lossbalances.• If the pool is only going to be used on weekends, reduce the heater temperature control setting by 8or 10 degrees during the week. Reset it to the 78°F(26°C) level a day or so before you plan to use thepool.• During the winter or when on vacation for longerthan a week, shut down the heater by followingthe shutdown instructions found in Section 8.6 andFigure 17. and on the inside of the heater.• Where possible, shelter the pool from prevailingwinds with well-trimmed hedges or otherlandscaping, cabanas, or fencing.• The greatest source of heat loss in a swimmingpool is through evaporation. It can account for 50%of pool systems total heat loss. The use of solarblankets, automatic covers or anything that limitsthe air’s access to the surface of the water will helpreduce this heat loss and minimize evaporation.9.3 WinterizingIn areas where freezing temperatures occur in winterand the pool or spa will not be used, the pool should bewinterized by a qualified pool service technician:• Turn off the electrical supply and the main gas supplyto the heater.• Remove the heater access panel.• Turn off gas supply to the heater following the shut-down instructions. See Section 8.6 and Figure 17.• Remove the drain plug from the inlet/outlet headerand completely drain the heater before the first frost.See Section 5.5.1 step “a”• Inspect the gasket on the drain plug. Store the drainplug in a safe place for winter.• Cover the exhaust vent grill with plastic so thatsnow will not accumulate and freeze on top of thecombustion chamber.• Remove and drain the copper tubing (siphon loop)for the water pressure switch.COPPERTUBINGFigure 19. Water Pressure Switch Copper Tubing(Siphon Loop)9.4 Spring Start-upWhen winterized, the heater should be reassembled by aqualifi ed professional technician in the Spring.• Reinstall the drain plug.• Uncover the vent grill.• Reattach copper tubing to water pressure switch.• Make sure power is supplied to the pump.• Turn on the fi lter pump and circulate water throughthe heater for 5 minutes. Check for leaks whilecirculating.• Turn on the main gas supply to the heater at the gascock outside the heater jacket.• Turn on the heater according to Section 8.6 andFigure 17.
