WORKING TECHNIQUES22 – English7 Take great care when cutting a tree that is undertension. A tree that is under tension may spring backto its normal position before or after being cut. If youposition yourself incorrectly or make the cut in thewrong place the tree may hit you or the machine andcause you to lose control. Both situations can causeserious personal injury.8 Before moving your chain saw switch off the engineand lock the chain using the chain brake. Carry thechain saw with the bar and chain pointing backwards.Fit a guard to the bar before transporting the chainsaw or carrying it for any distance.9 When you put the chain saw on the ground, lock thesaw chain using the chain brake and ensure you havea constant view of the machine. Switch the engine offbefore leaving your chain saw for any length of time.General rules1 If you understand what kickback is and how it happensthen you can reduce or eliminate the element ofsurprise. By being prepared you reduce the risk.Kickback is usually quite mild, but it can sometimes bevery sudden and violent.2 Always hold the chain saw firmly with your right handon the top handle and your left hand on the fronthandle. Wrap your fingers and thumbs around thehandles. You should use this grip whether you areright-handed or left-handed. This grip minimizes theeffect of kickback and lets you keep the chain sawunder control.Do not let go of the handles!3 Most kickback accidents happen during limbing. Makesure you are standing firmly and that there is nothingin the way that might make you trip or lose yourbalance.Lack of concentration can lead to kickback if thekickback zone of the bar accidentally touches abranch, nearby tree or some other object.Have control over the workpiece. If the pieces youintend to cut are small and light, they can jam in thesaw chain and be thrown towards you. Even if thisdoes not need to be a danger, you may be surprisedand lose control of the saw. Never saw stacked logs orbranches without first separating them. Only saw onelog or one piece at a time. Remove the cut pieces tokeep your working area safe.4 Never use the chain saw above shoulder heightand avoid cutting with the tip of the bar. Never usethe chain saw one-handed!5 Always use a fast cutting speed, i.e. full throttle.6 If you have to cut branches or the like that are aboveshoulder height, a working platform or scaffold toweris recommended.7 Take great care when you cut with the top edge of thebar, i.e. when cutting from the underside of the object.This is known as cutting with a pushing chain.
