27INITIAL SETUP• Bypass: This is the default setting. If your receiver or processor isequipped with 6-channel inputs and is capable of adjusting the bassmanagement settings (speaker size, output levels and delay times)for its 6-channel analog inputs (sometimes called the 6-channelDVD-Audio inputs during source selection), then we recommendyou leave this setting at the default Bypass, and adjust the bassmanagement settings on your receiver.• Stereo: If your receiver or processor is not equipped with 6-channelinputs at all, or if you wish to use the DVD 38 as the source for amultiroom system, to connect it directly to your TV or for recording, then change this setting to Stereo, which will send a downmixed 2-channel signal to the Analog Audio Outputs, for use with any 2-chan-nel analog input on your receiver. You may then select an analog sur-round mode available on your receiver.NOTE: The 2-channel downmix (Stereo mode) and the5.1-channel presentation of multichannel audio discs (Bypass orBass Management On modes) are not available simultaneously. With bass management on or in Bypass mode, the same frontleft and right channel information will be available at both the 2-Channel and 6-Channel left and right Analog Audio Outputs. Nocenter or surround information will be present in the signal out-put at the 2-channel Analog Audio Outputs. In Stereo mode, the downmixed 2-channel signal will beavailable at both the 2-Channel and 6-Channel Analog AudioOutputs, with no center or surround channel informationavailable at the 6-Channel Analog Audio Outputs.Step Three – Audio AdjustmentsThis menu allows you to adjust bass management settings that controlthe audio output of the 6-Channel Audio Outputs for speaker size, output level and delay times. The proper adjustment of these settingsis key to optimal reproduction of DVD-Audio discs, when the DVD 38 isused with a receiver or processor that does not have audio adjustmentcapabilities for the direct inputs. These settings are only effective whenthe Bass Management line of the AUDIO SETUP submenu is set to On.IMPORTANT NOTE: In order to avoid audio problems, whenthe DVD 38 is connected to a receiver thatdoes have thecapability to adjust bass management parameters for itsmultichannel inputs, it is preferable to use the receiver forthese adjustments. In that case, remember to set the BassManagement setting in the AUDIO SETUP menu to Bypass. If you make the adjustments using the DVD 38's settings, it isimportant that the receiver's settings for the multichannel directinputs be disabled, or set to “Large” for the speaker sizes and“0” for the level adjustments and delay times, unless thesesettings are also used for the receiver’s other source inputs, inwhich case they should be left the way you set them when youconfigured your receiver. If you have any questions about thecapabilities of your receiver or processor, we recommend thatyou consult its owner’s manual or the manufacturer’s Web sitefor further information. If your receiver does not have 6-channel analog inputs, make sure toselect Stereo for the Bass Management setting in the AUDIO SETUPmenu. Then connect the Analog Audio Outputs to any2-channel analog inputs on your receiver.Press the Setup Button to activate the Setup menu; then use the⁄/¤ Navigation Buttons until the AUDIO ADJUSTMENTS submenuis highlighted, and press the Enter Button. See Figure 25.Figure 25 – Audio Adjustments SubmenuThe following adjustments are available on the AUDIO ADJUSTMENTSmenu for each speaker position. Use the Navigation Buttons to selectthe settings for each speaker. Press the Enter Button to display a drop-down menu with the selections available for the setting. Use the ⁄/¤Navigation Buttons to highlight the appropriate setting, and then pressthe Enter Button to select it.You will notice that the adjustments for speaker size and distance (usedto calculate delay times) are set in tandem for the front left and rightspeaker pair, and for the surround left and right speaker pair. Changingthe settings for either speaker in these pairs also affects that setting forthe other speaker in that pair. For this reason, it is important to select thesame brand and model for both speakers in each pair, and also to placethem at about the same distance from the listening position. Before proceeding with the DVD 38’s audio setup adjustments, werecommend that you first use the menu system in your receiver toascertain the settings already established for “Speaker Size,” “OutputLevel” and “Delay Time” (may be set as a distance). Record thesesettings in Table A3 in the appendix to refer to during the configurationprocess, or follow these steps to obtain the information:1. Consult the frequency response specification (usually found in theowner’s manual) for each of your speakers. Make a note of thelowest frequency each speaker is capable of handling. For example,if your speaker has a frequency response of 80Hz – 20kHz, then80Hz is the lowest frequency it is capable of handling. For your subwoofer, the important figure is the highest frequency it iscapable of handling. For example, if the subwoofer has a frequencyresponse of 25Hz – 150Hz, then 150Hz is the highest frequencyit can handle. Some subwoofers allow you to adjust the frequencycrossover. Consult the subwoofer’s owner’s manual for instructions onsetting its crossover, and use the approximate number you selected.2. Measure the distance from each speaker to the listening position. This is used for setting the delay.
