28 DVD PLAYBACKUsing a DVD’s MenuOne of the unique features of the DVD system isthat it offers a producer the opportunity to include awide range of features on a disc, including multiple-language tracks; subtitles in a variety of languages;special information such as movie trailers and castinformation; as well as other customized information.In addition, producers may divide a movie or programinto chapters that allow for quick access to specificparts of the program. These chapters may beaccompanied by thumbnail pictures of a scenefrom the specific chapter to help you select thedesired spot on the disc.When a disc is playing, press the Disc Menu ButtonR to pause the playback and display the disc’smenu. As there are no hard rules about style andcontents for DVD menus, the way they appear on thescreen and the information they contain will vary fromone disc to another. However, the following generalrules apply to most menus:• You may move through the options on a menu withthe M NKLNavigation Buttons D, as thedisc’s programming allows. The option selectedwill typically be highlighted in a certain color orinside an outline box.• To select a highlighted option, which may eitherplay a portion of the disc or move to a submenu,press the Enter Button u.• On some discs, when you select the DVD menuduring the playback of a movie, the disc will returnto the point in the program where the menu wasselected by offering a “Play Movie” option. Pressthe Enter Button u or Play Button 2Nto resume play. However, not all discs offer thisfeature, and selecting the menu while playing amovie may mean that you will have to go back toeither the beginning of the program or the startof a chapter. This feature is out of the control ofthe DVD 37, as it is set by the disc’s internalprogramming.Important Notes on DVD PlaybackThe DVD 37 is capable of all the features and optionscovered by the DVD standards. However, it is up tothe producer of a DVD disc to decide which of thosefeatures and functions are available on any given disc.For that reason, not all discs will function identically,and some discs will not have many of the features ofthe DVD system. For example, most current DVD discsdo not take advantage of the multiple-angle feature.When you press a button and the player displays the“Feature Prohibited” icon “ ”, this is an indication thatthe disc has not been programmed for that feature.In addition, it is common for the producers of DVDdiscs to block the use of certain functions during onlysome parts of a disc. For example, many discs prohibitthe use of fast-play buttons or prohibit access to theChapter Menu display during the playback of copyrightnotices, studio logos, movie credits or trailers. Theappearance of the “Feature Prohibited” icon “ ”,or the inability of certain features to operate whenthe disc itself has prohibited them, does not indicatea problem with the DVD 37, as these features areoutside of the unit’s control.Zoom FeatureThe DVD 37’s advanced digital video processingcircuits include a Zoom feature which allows you toenlarge the image for closer examination of a particularpart of the picture. Four steps of enlargement areavailable.• To use the Zoom feature, press the Zoom ButtonM while a disc is playing or paused. Each pressof the button will increase the zoom-in effect. Whenyou have zoomed through all four steps, the picturewill return to normal size.• When the zoom feature is activated, you may usethe ⁄¤‹› Navigation Buttons n toexplore the enlarged picture once the informationbox with the zoom ratio and playback time no longerappears on the screen.• Some discs are created in a way that prevents theZoom feature from operating. In addition, the Zoomfeature will not operate on disc menus and may notoperate on subtitles.• The zoom function is also available for VCDs andJPEG files. However, for VCDs, only three steps ofenlargement are available.Playback Resume FeatureThe DVD 37 offers a “Resume” feature for DVD play-back that is different from the conventional “Stop”function you may be used to on CD players. Whenthe Stop Button 4P is pressed once, the discwill stop and Resume will appear briefly in theupper right corner of the video screen and in the MainInformation Display B. While the Resume featureis active, the disc’s position is entered into the unit’smemory so that when the Play Button 2N ispressed to resume playback, the program will continueat the point where it was when the Stop Button4P was pressed.To completely stop playback, press the Stop Button4P twice.You may resume a DVD (Audio or Video), CD, VCDwith Playback Control, MP3 or JPEG disc after placingthe DVD 37 in Standby mode. Resume will not oper-ate for WMA files or for VCDs that do not have play-back control.Disc Recognition FeatureWhen the Disc Recognition feature is turned on in theSYSTEM SETUP menu, you may press theStop Button 4P either once (to enter Resumemode) or twice (to enter Stop mode) and remove itfrom the player. Even if you turn the DVD 37 off, thenext time you insert that disc, you will be presentedwith the option of either starting playback from thebeginning, or resuming playback at the point at whichyou stopped previously. The DVD 37 can recognize upto five discs total.Using the Player Information MenuThe DVD 37’s Player Information menu displays discinformation and enables you to program playbackmodes. Press the Info Button i to display thePlayer Information menu (Figure 12).Figure 12The Player Information menu has two submenus whichmay be accessed by using the ⁄¤ NavigationButtons n to highlight the submenu’s icon, andpressing the Enter Button u to select it. Thesesubmenus are different from the Setup menus in thatmany items are for display only and cannot bechanged using the menu system.DVD PLAYBACK
