16 SETUP AND CONNECTIONSSETUP AND CONNECTIONSOne of the major advantages of the DVD format is itsability to use a variety of digital audio formats for theultimate in sonic performance. However, in order toenjoy the benefits of digital audio, you must use areceiver or processor that has digital audio decodingcapabilities and make an optical or coaxial digital audioconnection between the DVD 37 and your home the-ater system. This simple connection is made as shownbelow with an optional coax or optical cable. Only oneof these connections is required, and both should notbe made at the same time.In order to take advantage of the high-resolutionDVD-Audio output of the DVD 37, you must connectthe 6-Channel Audio Outputs 9 to the matching6-channel inputs on your receiver or processor. Onlycompressed PCM, Dolby Digital or DTS tracks thatmay be present on the disc may be listened to usingthe digital audio outputs. Thus, the DVD 37 decodesthe digital signal and outputs separate signals for eachchannel: front left, center, front right, surround right, surround left and low-frequency effects (LFE).NOTES FOR ANALOG AUDIO:• If you wish to use the DVD 37 as the input for amultiroom system, the Analog Audio Outputs ªshould be connected to the standard analog left/right DVD or CD inputs on your digital receiver orprocessor.• The connection from the Analog Audio Outputsª to the TV is optional. If you plan on occasionallyusing your DVD 37 alone, without turning on yourcomplete system, this connection must be made.• When the audio signal is to be fed to an analogreceiver rather than to the TV, connect the AnalogAudio Outputs ª to any analog audio inputs onyour receiver or processor. The DVD 37 will “down-mix” multichannel recordings to two channels.• The analog audio connection should also be madeif you wish to play high-resolution 96kHz PCMaudio discs where your receiver does not support96kHz processing.• In each of these four cases in which the AnalogAudio Outputs ª are used, set the bass manage-ment line of the AUDIO SETUP menu toSTEREO.NOTES ON VIDEO:• With multiple video sources, your audio/videoreceiver can be used for selecting the video signaland routing it to the TV. Connect the HDMI 2,Component ∞, Composite § or S-Video ¶output of the DVD 37 to the correct video input onyour receiver, and the video outputs of the receiverto your TV. For more details, see the manual for youraudio/video receiver.• If your receiver has only DVI inputs, you may use anoptional HDMI-to-DVI cable or adapter for the con-nection to the receiver. In addition, the video displayused with your system must be HDCP-compatible inorder to take advantage of the HDMI output, whetherit is used with HDMI or DVI connections.Connecting to a ReceiverWhen using the DVD 37 with an audio/video receiveror processor, connect it as follows. First, make oneof the video connections (Composite Video ç,S-Video ∂, Component Video é or HDMI ˙)to the video input jacks on the A/V receiver, andthen connect the receiver’s video monitor outputto the TV. If you will sometimes use the TV withoutthe audio component, you may optionally make theAnalog Audio Connection ∫ to the TV. In addition,to benefit from the high-resolution surround sound for-mats recorded on DVD-Audio discs, which are not out-put via the HDMI connection, you will need to makethe 6-Channel Audio Connection å to your receiveror processor.Second, if your receiver or processor is not HDMI-capable, make either the Optical Digital AudioConnection © or the Coaxial Digital AudioConnection ƒ, to the receiver or processor.Remember that when the HDMI connection is usedwith a receiver or processor that is compliant with theHDMI format, a single connection suffices for bothaudio and video, except for DVD-Audio discs, asnoted. If your receiver or processor is not capable ofprocessing the HDMI audio signal, then a separateaudio connection is required. If your receiver/processorhas multiroom capability, you may also connect theDVD 37’s analog audio outputs to the DVD analogaudio inputs on the receiver.IMPORTANT NOTE: Make certain that any devicebeing connected, including the DVD 37, your receiveror processor and your TV or video display, is turned offwhenever you make connections between products. When using the HDMI é connection, turn on yoursystem components in this order: 1) television or videodisplay, 2) receiver or processor, and 3) DVD 37.郩˙ ∂ ç ∫ åTo Y (green)/Pb (blue)/Pr (red)componentvideoconnectorsTo S-videoinputconnectorsTo coaxialdigitalaudioinputconnectorsTo opticaldigitalaudioinputconnectorsTo analog audioinput connectors(red/white)on the TVor receiver(see above)To 6-channelanalog audioinputs onreceiverTo videoinputconnectors(yellow) To power outlet(AC 120V/60Hz)Dolby Digital/DTS A/V Receiver or ProcessorFront Speakers(Left/Right)Surround Speakers(Left/Right)CenterSpeakerSubwoofer HDMI, DVI, Component,S-video and/orComposite videomonitor outputs TVToHDMIor DVIportAC INPUT120V~, 60Hz13WConnecting to a Receiver/Amplifier With a Dolby Digital or DTS Decoder
