Using Ultra SCSI in your HP NetServerStarting October 1996, HP began shipping Ultra SCSI capable disk drives. Ultra SCSI is a newindustry standard that allows for data transfer rates of up to 40 Mb per second. In order for UltraSCSI to work properly, all affected components (SCSI controller, cabling, disk drive, and SCSIterminator) must be Ultra SCSI compliant. If any of these components are not Ultra SCSIcompatible, Ultra SCSI must be disabled for the SCSI channel, to avoid potential data corruption.NOTE: The drives on a SCSI bus may be a mixture of Ultra SCSI capable and non Ultra SCSIdrives. The controller negotiates the bus mode with each drive, depending on the drive's individualcapabilities. The following matrix shows the support of Ultra-SCSI in HP’s current NetServers:NetServer Platform Ultra SCSI ready? SCSI controller defaultLXe Pro and LX Pro systems shipped between July96 and November 96Yes Ultra SCSILXe Pro and LX Pro systems shipped afterNovember 96 or with Navigator CD release ver.G.00.00Yes Fast-Wide SCSILH Plus, LH Pro Yes Fast-Wide SCSIHP Storage System/6 No*LC, LH, LS, E Series No* The HP Storage System/6 does not support Ultra SCSI because of the cable length limitation of UltraSCSI. Customers must set the NetServer’s integrated SCSI controller channel to fast-and-wideSCSI if they wish to connect the SCSI channel to the HP Storage System/6. When a SCSI channel setto Ultra-SCSI mode is connected to the HP Storage System/6 with Ultra SCSI drives, the Ultra SCSIchannel and drives will automatically try to communicate in Ultra SCSI mode, but data integrity is notguaranteed over the long cable between the server and the external storage unit.HP’s overall strategy is to ship NetServers with Fast-and-Wide SCSI as the default setting andUltra-SCSI as an easy-to-turn-on feature. The reason for keeping Fast-and-Wide SCSI as thedefault setting is that we want to prevent problems that may occur if customers connect a SCSIcontroller set to Ultra-SCSI mode to an external HP Storage System/6. THE HP STORAGESYSTEM/6 DOES NOT SUPPORT ULTRA SCSI BECAUSE OF CABLE LENGTHLIMITATION OF ULTRA SCSI.HP sells 3 Ultra SCSI capable disk drives:- 2.1GB Hot Swap Ultra SCSI disk drive (D3582C), and- 4.2GB Hot Swap Ultra SCSI disk drive (D3583C)- 9.1GB Hot Swap Ultra SCSI disk drive (D4289A) [available November 1996].These drives are supported in HP NetServer LH, LH+, LH Pro, LS, LXe, LX, and StorageSystem/6. They are compatible with Fast SCSI for those systems that do not support Ultra SCSI.They will provide Ultra SCSI functionality on LH+, LH Pro, LXe, and LX only.
