The power levels on yourmicrowave oven can be compared to thesurface units on a range. Each power levelgives you microwave energy a certain percentof the time. Power level 7 is microwave energy70% of the time. Power level 3 is microwaveenergy 30% of the time. Most cooking will bedone on High (power level 10) which givesyou 100% power.Power level 10 will cook faster but food mayneed more frequent stirring, rotating orturning over. A lower setting will cook moreevenly and need less stirring or rotating ofthe food. Some foods may have better flavor, texture orappearance if one of the lower settings is used.Use a lower power level when cooking foodsthat have a tendency to boil over, such asscalloped potatoes.Rest periods (when the microwave energycycles off) give time for the food to “equalize”or transfer heat to the inside of the food. Anexample of this is shown with power level 3—the defrost cycle. If microwave energy did notcycle off, the outside of the food would cookbefore the inside was defrosted. Here are some examples of uses for variouspower levels:POWER LEVEL BEST USESHigh 10 Fish, bacon, vegetables, boiling liquids.Med-High 7 Gentle cooking ofmeat and poultry;baking casserolesand reheating.Medium 5 Slow cooking andtenderizing such asstews and less tendercuts of meat.Low 3 Defrosting withoutcooking; simmering;delicate sauces.Warm 1 Keeping food warmwithout overcooking;softening butter.ENTERCANCEL10HIGHERLOWERPOWER LEVEL
