Refer to the IMPORTANTSAFETY INSTRUCTIONS provided withthis product and save them for futurereference.IMPORTANT: Because cordless phonesoperate on electricity, you should have atleast one phone in your home that isn’tcordless, in case the power in your homegoes out.If you have purchased an extra handsetapart from your original purchased unityou may find a detailed description of itsfunctions in the User’s Guide provided withyour original purchased unit.If you have purchased an extra handsetthat is not of the same type as youroriginal handset you may still use theoriginal User’s Guide to help explain thenew handsets basic functions and options.Parts ChecklistMake sure your package includes the items shown here.InstallationDigital Security SystemYour cordless phone uses a digital security system toprotect against false ringing, unauthorized access, andcharges to your phone line.INSTALLATION NOTE: This productoperates at a frequency of 1.9GHz. toprovide communication with minimalinterference from other electronic devices.To further minimize the possibility ofinterference, the base of the cordlesstelephone should not be placed near oron top of a TV, microwave oven, or VCR. Ifinterference continues, move the cordlesstelephone further away from theseappliances.Important InstallationGuidelines• Avoid sources of noise and heat, such as motors,fluorescent lighting, microwave ovens, heatingappliances and direct sunlight.• Avoid areas of excessive dust, moisture and lowtemperature.• Avoid other cordless telephones.• Never install telephone wiring during a lightning storm.• Never install telephone jacks in wet locations unless thejack is specifically designed for wet locations.• Never touch non-insulated telephone wires orterminals, unless the telephone line has beendisconnected at the network interface.• Use caution when installing or modifying telephonelines.Handset Layout NOTE: The handset display will turn offafter 60 seconds of inactivity to savebattery life. Lift from cradle to activate orif handset was not on the charge cradle,press the END button to toggle betweenthe Change Status and Idle Screen.Installing the HandsetBatteryNOTE: You must install the handsetbatteries before using the cordlesshandset.CAUTION: To reduce the risk of fire orpersonal injury, use only the ThomsonInc. approved model BYD NiMH H-AAA900mAh 1.2V, rechargeable Nickel-metal Hydride AAA batteries, which arecompatible with this unit.1. Locate batteries and battery door which are packagedtogether inside a plasticbag and are separatefrom the handset.2. Locate the batterycompartment on theback of the handset.3. Insert the batteries.4. Close the batterycompartment bypushing the door upuntil it snaps into place.5. Plug the AC poweradaptor of the chargecradle into an electricaloutlet.6. Place the handset inthe charge cradle. TheCHARGE indicator turnson, verifying the battery is charging.Allow handset to charge for 16 hours prior to first use.If you do not properly charge the handset, batteryperformance is compromised.RegistrationYOU MUST REGISTER THE HANDSET BEFORE USE!After the optional handset has charged for 16 hours;Screen displays Press reset button on base and inserthandset in charger. Handset will automatically registerto base.NOTE: Once a handset has completedregistration successfully, HANDSET Xshows on the handset’s display, X standsfor handset number, you can rename yourhandset.NOTE: The maximum number of handsetswhich can be registered to the system is 4.NOTE: The new handset will beautomatically UPDATED or DOWNGRADEDto the actual software version of the base.Handset NameThis menu allows you to enter a name for the handset,which displays on the top banner of the idle screen.1. From the idle screen, press to enter the mainmenu.2. Press and to select Settings.3. Press and to select Cordless settings.4. Press and to select Handset name.5. Enter the handset name (up to 12 characters).6. Press to save your selection.NOTE: If you make a mistake, use thebutton to backspace and delete onecharacter at a time or press and hold todelete all.De-RegistrationThis feature allows you to remove a registered handsetfrom connection to base. During the de-registrationprocess, keep the handset near the base.Use the Deregister function to deregister your handsetfrom a base station.1. From the idle screen, press to enter the mainmenu.2. Press and to select Settings.3. Press and to select Cordless settings.4. Press and to select Deregister handset.WARNING: It is not recommended that ahandset be de-registered unless absolutelynecessary because once a handset isde-registered, that handset’s telephonefeatures cannot be used until the handset isre-registered.5. Select NO, if you do not want to de-register.6. If you select YES, then screen will display Your handsetis not registered to base station any more!.Re-Register Your HandsetUse the Register function whenever you need to registeryour handset with a base station, for instance whenregistering the handset with a base station other than theone you are already registered to.1. From the idle screen, press to enter the mainmenu.2. Press and to select Settings.3. Press and to select Cordless settings.4. Press and to select Register handset.5. Screen displays Press reset button on base station andinsert hand-set in charger. Handset will automaticallyregister to base.NOTE: To make registration possible, makesure that the base station has registrationmode enabled. This is done by pressingReset on the back of the base station.Intercom OperationThe intercom feature allows you to have a conversationwith another registered handset without tying up thetelephone line, allowing you to still receive incoming calls.Making an Intercom Call(Handset to Handset Intercom Call)1. From the idle screen, press to enter the mainmenu.2. Press and to select INTERCOM.3. Press and to select from any availableregistered handset or Internal Call to All. The receivinghandset(s) rings. Wait for the person at the receivinghandset to press to connect the call.NOTE: To cancel, press on the sendinghandset.4. When finished, press on either handset todeactivate the intercom.NOTE: The system is expandable up to 4handsets (by purchase of optional Model28311 handset with recharge cradle).When 4 handsets are registered, thesystem can handle 2 separate intercomoperations at once, for example, 1sthandset intercoms with 2nd handset while3rd handset intercoms with 4th handset.Receiving an Intercom CallWhen you receive an intercom call, your handset ringswith the selected melody and the Handset ID of sendingphone shows in the display. To answer the call press .Advanced IntercomFeaturesReceiving an Incoming CallDuring an Intercom CallIf you receive an external telephone call (landline or Skype)during an intercom call, both parties on the intercom callwill receive a double beep in the earpiece. The handsetdisplays the Caller’s ID (if available) and Answer call?.a) To ignore the incoming call, press .NOTE: If a 3rd handset is registered to thesystem, the external call can be answeredby this handset and the intercom call cancontinue at the same time.b) To answer the call, press . Selecting Yes willconnect your handset to the external call and willplace the intercom call on hold.You may now switch between the intercom call and theexternal call or conference the other handset to theexternal call.a) To switch between the external call and theintercom call: Press , (Swap calls). This puts theexternal call on Hold. The external caller will heara double beep every 10 seconds to indicate theyare on Hold. You can return to the intercom call bypressing again.b) To conference the other handset to the externalcall:Press , then pressress and to select Join inConference.c) To end the conference call, both handsets mustpress .NOTE: The current status of each handsetshows at the top of the handset display.i.e. Intercom, Landline Call, Skype Call orConfererence Call as you progress throughthe steps above.Using Intercom w/External PhoneCallsDuring a telephone call, you may use the intercomfunction to page another handset and have an off line,private (two-way) intercom conversation. You may alsohave a three-way conversation between the externalcaller and the handsets, or you may transfer the externaltelephone call to another handset.Two-Way Calling1. During an external call, press to put the call onHold.2. Press to select OPTIONS.3. Press and to select Invite Handset.4. Press and to select from any availableregistered handset or Internal Call to All. The receivinghandset(s) is paged and emits a tone. Wait for theperson at the receiving handset to press toconnect the call. Both intercom users may now speakprivately. The external caller will not hear the intercomconversation.5. When finished, press on either handset todeactivate the intercom. The originating handsetdisplays Landline Call and On Hold.6. Press to re-connect to the external call.Three-Way CallingRegular Method:For use with 2 handsets and an external landline callDuring a landline call with a handset, the other registeredhandset(s) display Landline Busy. To have a secondhandset join the call;1. Press .2. Pressress to connect. The original handset will hear abeep to indicate another handset has joined the call.NOTE: The above procedure will only work fora Landline Call. For three way calling with anexternal Skype call, use the “Invite Handset”method.“Invite Handset” Method:For use with 2 handsets and a Skype Call or landline call1. During an external call, press to put the call onHold.2. Press to select OPTIONS.3. Press and to select Invite Handset.4. Press and to select from any availableregistered handset or Internal Call to All. The receivinghandset(s) is paged and emits a tone. Wait for theperson at the receiving handset to press toconnect the call.5. Press on the originating handset to selectOPTIONS.6. Press and to select Join in Conference.7. To end conference call, both handsets must press.Transferring External Calls to OtherHandsets1. Follow steps 1 - 6 for Three Way Calling Invite HandsetMethod.2. After conference is established, press onoriginating handset. External call is connected to thesecond handset.Changing the BatteryCAUTION: To reduce the risk of fire orpersonal injury, use only the ThomsonInc. approved model BYD NiMH H-AAA900mAh 1.2V, rechargeable Nickel-metal Hydride AAA batteries, which iscompatible with this unit.1. Make sure handset is OFF (not in TALK mode) beforeyou replace battery.2. Remove the battery compartment door.3. Remove the batteries from the handset.4. Insert the new batteries.5. Put the battery compartment door back on.6. Place handset in the base or handset charge cradle tocharge. Allow the handset battery to properly charge(for 16 hours) prior to first use or when you install anew battery pack. If you do not properly charge thephone, battery performance will be compromised.Battery Safety Precautions• Do not burn, disassemble, mutilate, or puncture.Batteries of this type could release toxic materialswhich can cause injury.• To reduce the risk of fire or personal injury, use onlythe Nickel-metal Hydride battery listed in the User’sGuide.• Keep batteries out of the reach of children.• Remove batteries if storing over 30 days.Limited WarrantyWhat your warranty covers:• Defects in materials or workmanship.For how long after your purchase:• One year, from date of purchase.(The warranty period for rental units begins with the firstrental or 45 days from date of shipment to the rental firm,whichever comes first.)What we will do:• Provide you with a new or, at our option, a refurbished unit.The exchange unit is under warranty for the remainder ofthe original product’s warranty period.How you get service:• Properly pack your unit.
