You must, upon request,provide this information to your telephone company.The REN is useful in determining the number of devices you mayconnect to your telephone line and still have all of these devicesring when your telephone number is called. In most (but not all)areas, the sum of the RENs of all devices connected to one lineshould not exceed 5. Refer to the IMPORTANTSAFETY INSTRUCTIONS provided with thisproduct and save them for future reference.IMPORTANT: Because cordless phones operate onelectricity, you should have at least one phone inyour home that isn’t cordless, in case the power inyour home goes out.Parts ChecklistMake sure your package includes the items shown here.Installing the PhoneInstalling the Handset BatteryNOTE: You must connect the handset battery beforeuse.CAUTION: To reduce the risk of fire or personalinjury, use only the Thomson Inc. approvedNickel-metal Hydride battery model 5-2721,which is compatible with this unit.1. Locate battery and battery door which are packaged togetherinside a plastic bag and are separate from the handset.2. Locate the battery compartment on the back of the handset.3. Plug the battery pack cord into the jack inside the compartment.NOTE: To ensure proper battery installation, theconnector is keyed and can be inserted only oneway.4. Insert the battery pack.5. Close the battery compartment by pushing the door up until itsnaps into place.6. Place the handset in the base to charge.Extra Charging Cradle1. Plug the AC power converter of the extra charging cradle into theelectrical outlet.2. Place the handset in the extra charging cradle. The chargeindicator turns on, verifying the battery is charging.3. Allow the phone to charge for 16 hours prior to first use.RegistrationYOU MUST REGISTER THE HANDSET BEFORE USE!After the optional handset has charged for 16 hours, HANDSETNEEDS REGISTRATION shows in the display.1. Press the menu/mute button. HOLD BASE PAGE WAIT FOR BEEPshows in the display. (Your handset should be held near the baseduring registration process.)2. Press and hold the page button on the base unit until you heara confirmation tone. HANDSET X REGISTERED shows in thehandset display, where X is the handset number. You may nowrename your handset. (Refer to Step 3 & 4 of Handset NameSection).Naming the Handset1. Use the touch-tone pad to enter a name (up to 15 characters).NOTE: If you make a mistake, use the delete/intbutton to backspace and delete one character at atime.2. Press the menu/mute button to save your name. You will hear aconfirmation tone and the handset name shows in the display.De-RegistrationThis feature allows you to remove a registered handset frombase. During the de-registration process, keep the handset nearthe base.From the Handset Setup Menu:1. Press the cid/vol ( 6 or 5) button to scroll to the DEREGISTRATIONsub-menu.2. Press the menu/mute button to enter the menu. DEREGISTRATION1YES 42NO shows in the display The default setting is "2NO".3. Use the touch-tone pad to select 1 for YES or 2 for NO. Or use thecid/vol ( 6 or 5) button to scroll to 1YES or 2NO.WARNING: It is not recommended that a handset bede-registered unless absolutely necessary becauseonce a handset is de-registered, that handset’stelephone features cannot be used until the handset isre-registered.4. Select NO, if you do not want to de-register.5. If you select 1YES, press the menu/mute button and MOVE NEARTO BASE displays for 2 seconds, then CONFIRM? 1YES 2NOappears in the display.6. Press the touch-tone pad to select 1YES or 2NO, or use the cid/vol( 6 or 5) button to scroll to 1YES or 2NO.7. If you select YES, press the menu/mute button to confirm.DE-REGISTER... shows in the display. You will hear a confirmationtone. Then HANDSET X DEREGISTERED shows in the display toconfirm the handset is deregistered.NOTE: When you complete the de-registrationprocess, HANDSET NEEDS REGISTRATION showsin the display. To use the handset, you MUST re-register the handset using the Registration process.Global De-registrationIf one or more handsets becomes lost, you should de-register allhandsets to ensure proper system operation. Follow the steps belowto de-register all handsets at the same time.WARNING: It is not recommended that a handset bede-registered unless absolutely necessary becauseonce a handset is de-registered, that handset’stelephone features cannot be used until the handset isre-registered.1. Press and hold the page button on the base until the charge/inuse indicator on the base flashes. Release.2. Press and hold the page button on the base again until thecharge/in use indicator on the base flashes rapidly. Release.3. Press and release the page button on the base once.4. All handsets are de-registered and HANDSET NEEDSREGISTRATION shows in the display.Intercom Operation(applicable only with additional handsets)The intercom feature allows you to have a conversation withanother registered handset without tying up the telephone line,allowing you to still receive incoming calls.Making an Intercom Call1. Make sure the handset is OFF (not in talk mode).2. Press delete/int on the handset.3. Use the touch-tone pad to select the handset you want to page.NOTE: To cancel page, press the delete/int buttonagain or the flash/exit button on the sendinghandset.4. Wait for the person at the receiving handset to press delete/int.NOTE: If the receiving handset does not answerwithin two minutes, the intercom call isautomatically canceled. The originating handsetdisplays NO ANSWER.5. When finished, press the flash/exit button or delete/int button oneither handset to de-activate the intercom.NOTE: The system is expandable up to 4 handsets(by purchase of optional Model 21920 handset withrecharge cradle). When 4 handsets are registered,the system can handle 2 separate intercomoperations at once, for example, 1st handsetintercoms with 2nd handset while 3rd handsetintercoms with 4th handset.Receiving an Intercom CallWhen you receive an intercom call, your handset beeps. To answerthe call press the delete/int button or talk/end button.NOTE: If you receive a telephone call during anintercom call, the intercom call is immediatelyterminated and both handsets ring. Either handsetuser may press the talk/end button to answer thecall.Using Intercom with ExternalTelephone CallsDuring a telephone call, you may use the intercom/paging functionto;• page another handset and have an off line, private (two-way)intercom conversation,• have a three-way conversation between the external caller andthe handsets,• transfer the external telephone call to another handset.1. During an external call, press the delete/int button. LINE ONHOLD EXTENSION? shows in the display.2. Use the touch-tone pad to select Handset #. You will hear apaging tone and PAGING shows in the originating handset’sdisplay.NOTE: PAGING FROM... shows in the display onthe receiving handset, and the receiving handsetpresses the delete/int or talk/end button to answerthe intercom.3. When the receiving handset connects;a) You may have an off line, private (two-way) intercomconversation, the external caller will not hear the conversation.b) Press the redial/format/conf button on the originatinghandset to have a three-way conversation with the receivinghandset and the external caller. CONFERENCE shows in thedisplay on the originating and receiving handsets.NOTE: A handset can enter conference modedirectly by pressing talk/end on the second handsetduring a call.4. When finished, press the flash/exit button or delete/int button toend the intercom call, return to the talk mode, and resume youroriginal telephone conversation or press the talk/end button onthe originating handset to transfer the call to the second handsetand end the call on the originating handset.Changing the BatteryCAUTION: To reduce the risk of fire or personalinjury, use only the Thomson Inc. approvedmodel 5-2721 Nickel-metal Hydride battery(Ni-MH), which is compatible with this unit.1. Make sure the telephone is OFF (not in TALK mode) before youreplace the battery.2. Remove the battery compartment door.3. Disconnect the cord attached to the battery pack and remove thebattery pack from the handset.4. Plug the battery pack cord into the jack inside the compartment5. Put the battery compartment door back on.6. Place handset in the base or handset charge cradle to charge.Allow the handset battery to properly charge (for 16 hours)prior to first use or when you install a new battery pack. If youdo not properly charge the phone, battery performance will becompromised.Battery Safety Precautions• Do not burn, disassemble, mutilate, or puncture. Batteries of thistype could release toxic materials which can cause injury.• To reduce the risk of fire or personal injury, use only the Nickel-metal Hydride battery listed in the User’s Guide.• Keep batteries out of the reach of children.• Remove batteries if storing over 30 days.Limited WarrantyWhat your warranty covers:• Defects in materials or workmanship.For how long after your purchase:• One year, from date of purchase.(The warranty period for rental units begins with the first rentalor 45 days from date of shipment to the rental firm, whichevercomes first.)What we will do:• Provide you with a new or, at our option, a refurbished unit.The exchange unit is under warranty for the remainder of theoriginal product’s warranty period.How you get service:• Properly pack your unit. Include any cables, etc., which wereoriginally provided with the product. We recommend using theoriginal carton and packing materials.• ”Proof of purchase in the form of a bill of sale or receiptedinvoice which is evidence that the product is within the warrantyperiod, must be presented to obtain warranty service.” For rentalfirms, proof of first rental is also required. Also print your nameand address and a description of the defect.
