Starting, stopping, driving, and mowing require thecombined use of several controls applied inspecific sequences. To learn what combinationand sequence of controls to use for varioustasks please read the entire section.TransmissionReleaseLevers Mower BladeSwitchRUNOF_. STARTIgnitionSwitchFigure 1. ControlsGround Speed Levers /Parking BrakeThese levers control the ground speed and parking brakeof the rider. The left lever controls the left rear drivewheel and the right lever controls the right rear drivewheel and parking brake.Pushing the levers out to the side, away from theoperator's lap, locks the parking brake in PARK position(inset, Figure 1). This is the proper position for startingthe rider. Pulling the levers in across the operator's lapputs the levers in DRIVE positions. From DRIVE position, moving a lever forward increasesthe FORWARD speed of the associated wheel. Pullingback on a lever increases the REVERSE speed. Thefurther a lever is pushed, the faster the drive wheel willturn.See DRIVING PRACTICE for steering instructions._1_ Engine Speed ControlThe engine speed control adjusts engine speed. Alwaysset the engine speed to FAST for driving and mowing.Move the engine speed control back to SLOW todecrease engine speed. NEVER turn on the mowerblades with the engine speed set to SLOW. Only turn onthe mower blades with the engine speed set to FAST.ChokeCLOSE the choke for cold starting (pull knob up). OPENthe choke once the engine starts (push knob down). Ifthe engine is warm, it may not require choking. If this isthe case, set the choke to OPEN (push the knob down)while cranking the engine. In most cases, you will needto close the choke in order to start the engine.10
