Neverrun the enginewithoutan air cleanercompletelyassembled.Cleanor replacetheair cleanerevery 25 hoursof operation.1. Loosenscrewand tilt plastichousingcoveron sideof enginedown.See Figure18.2. Removeair filter from plastichousingcover and replacewithcleanor newfilter.3. insert cover'stabs into slotsin bottomof base.4. Tilt cover up into placeand tighten screw.NOTE:If the filter is torn or damagedin anyway,replaceit.Checking Engine Oil1. Stopengineand wait severalminutesbeforecheckingoil level.With engineon levelground,the oil mustbe to FULLmarkondipstick.2. Removeoil fill dipstickand wipeclean with cloth.3. Replaceandtightendipstick.Removeand checkoil level.Levelshouldbe at FULLmark.4. If needed,add oil slowly- recheck.Do notoverfill.5. Select theoil's SAEviscositygradeaccordingto the expectedoperatingtemperature.Referto Opera-tion sectionfor viscositychart.• Changeengineoil afterthe first five to eighthoursof operation,and everyfifty hoursor every seasonthereafter.Changeoil everytwentyfive hourswhenoperatingengineunder heavyload or inhigh temperatures.To Drain Oil1. Drainthe fuelfrom the tank by runningthe engineuntil thefueltank is empty.2. Disconnectsparkplug wireand keepit away fromspark plug.3. With engineOFF butstill warm removeoil fill dipstick.4. Tip uniton its side (sparkplug side up) to drain throughthe oil filltubeinto appropriatereceptacle.Servicing Muffler• inspectmufflerperiodically,and replaceif necessary.Replace-mentparts for the mufflermustbe the sameand installedin thesamepositionas theoriginal parts,otherwisefirecan occur.Cleaning Engine• Dailyor beforeevery use,cleangrass,chaff or accumulateddebrisfrom engine.Keeplinkage,spring,and controlsclean.Keepareaaroundand behindmufflerfree of anycombustibledebris.• Keepingenginecleanallowsair movementaroundengine.• Engineparts shouldbe kept cleanto reducethe risk of over-heatingand ignitionof accumulateddebris. This isespeciallyimportantifcuttingtall grass.Donot usewater to cleanengineparts.Watercouldcontaminatefuelsystem.Use a brushor dry cloth.17
