CARBURETOR ADJUSTMENTThe idle speed of the engine is adjustable. An idle adjust-ment screw is on the rear side of the carburetor (Fig. 21).NOTE: Careless adjustments can seriously damageyour unit. Only a Sears or other qualified dealer shouldmake carburetor adjustments.CLEAN AIR FILTERThe condition of the air filter is important to the opera-tion of the unit. A dirty or oil saturated air filter willrestrict air flow. This is often mistaken for an out ofadjustment carburetor. Check the condition of the airfilter before adjusting the idle speed screw. Refer toCleaning Air Filter (p.13).ADJUST IDLE SPEED SCREWIf, after checking the fuel and cleaning the air filter, theengine still will not idle, adjust the idle speed screw asfollows:1.Start the engine and let it run at a high idle for aminute to warm up. Refer to Starting/Stopping (p.10)instructions.2. Release the throttle trigger and let the engine idle. Ifthe engine stops, use a small phillips or fiat blade toturn the idle speed screw in, clockwise, 1/8 of a turnat a time (as needed) until the engine idles smoothly.NOTE: The cutting attachment should not rotate whenthe engine idles.3. If the cutting attachment rotates when the engineidles, turn the idle speed screw counterclockwise1/8 of a turn at a time (as needed), to reduce idlespeed. Checking the fuel, cleaning the air filter, andadjusting the idle speed should solve most engineproblems. If not and all of the following are true, check the spark plug for proper gap and condition.• the engine will not idle• the engine hesitates or stalls on acceleration• there is a loss of engine powerIf problem still occurs, have the carburetor adjusted bya Sears or other qualified service dealer.WARNING:Do not sand blast, scrape, or cleanspark plug electrodes. Grit in theengine could damage the cylinder.Idle AdjustmentScrewFig.21REPLACING THE SPARK PLUGUse NGK CMR6A or Champion RCJ6Y replacementspark plugs. The correct air gap is 0.02 in. (0.5 mm). Remove theplug after every 25 hours of operation and check itscondition.1.Stop the engine and allow it to cool. Remove thespark plug cover. Grasp the plug wire firmly and pullthe cap from the spark plug.2.Clean dirt from around the spark plug. Remove thespark plug from the cylinder head by using a 5/8 in.socket, turning it counterclockwise.3.Replace cracked, fouled or dirty spark plug. Set theair gap at 0.02 in. (0.5 mm.) using a feeler gauge(Fig 22).4.Install a correctly-gapped spark plug in the cylinderhead. Turn the 5/8 in. socket clockwise until snug.If using a torque wrench torque to: 110-120 in. lb.(12.3-13.5 N-m)NOTE: Do not over tighten.0.02 in.(0.5 mm)Fig.2214
