As one example, you can usethis remote to operate your set-top, your TV, andtwo other devices, such as a DVD player andVCR.Important Information AboutYour RemoteYour remote is initially programmed to only operateyour set-top. Therefore, you must program theremote to operate your TV, VCR, or other devices.See Program the Remote to Control MyDevices to learn how to enter device codes andprogram your remote.Notes:• You must program a HomeID before using thisremote.• You must also program a Decoder ID if you areusing multiple remotes per set-top.How Does A Universal RemoteControl Work? You tell the remote which type of device you wantto operate using the four keys arched across thetop of the remote. These keys, known as modekeys, are labeled STB, TV, DVD, and AUX.Each mode key is associated with a specificdevice. As an example, after programming theremote, if you want the remote to operate yourTV, you simply press the TV key. Other keys youpress on the remote, thereafter, should operateyour TV. Want to switch the remote to operate adifferent device? Just press the mode key for thenext device you want to operate. In this guide, youwill learn which types of devices you can controland how to program the remote to control yourspecific devices.Where Do I Start? Before you begin using your remote, complete thefollowing initial setup tasks.Install the BatteriesThe remote requires two AA batteries (alkalinerecommended). A diagram in the battery compartmentof the remote indicates proper placement of thebatteries. When batteries are properly installed, thelight on the remote blinks each time a key ispressed.About HomeIDThe set-top is equipped with an RF receiver.Programming the HomeID in the remote is necessarywhen RF is used to transmit signals to the set-topfrom the remote in order to limit interference withset-tops in other rooms or in your neighbors’ homes.Go to the Program HomeID section of this guide forinstructions.Note: The remote uses IR signals when programmingthe HomeID and to control devices other than theset-top.Program the Remote to ControlMy DevicesYour remote is initially programmed to only operateyour set-top. You will need to set up the remote tooperate your other devices using its TV, DVD, andAUX modes. The TV key may be programmed tooperate a standard or high-definition television(HDTV). The DVD key may be programmed tooperate a DVD player. The AUX key may beprogrammed to operate a VCR, a receiver, anamplifier, or a Home Theater in a Box (HTIB)system. If the remote provides only limitedfunctionality for a device, you can look for a codethat provides more functionality. Refer to the codetables at the end of this guide to locate additionalprogramming codes.Note: You have the option to assign some remotekeys to operate one device type only. For example, you may want to assign volume control to the TV only.If this is the case, you can reprogram power, volume, and channel control using procedures found later inthis guide.Assigning a Device Code to a Mode Key1. Whenusing an RF remote, a HomeID is required for propercommunication between the RF remote and the set-top. After the appropriate assignment, the RF remotewill then be uniquely used for the assigned set-top.The use of RF in the remote enables “through walls”control of the set-top. It may be used to transmitinstructions from another room. The use of HomeIDalso limits any interference with set-tops in otherrooms or in your neighbors’ homes. All RF devices have the HomeID set to 000 by default.Complete the following steps to set a new HomeID.1. Ensure that the set-top is plugged into an electricaloutlet and that you have the remote in the sameroom as the set-top.2. Press and hold the STB mode key on the remote.3. This indicates that you havesuccessfully entered the code.6. Now enter your own choice of a 3-digit code from000 to 255 by pressing the number keys on theremote. This will be your unique new HomeID code.Be sure to record your HomeID in the spaceprovided at the end of this section.Notes:• If a valid HomeID code is entered, the STB modekey will flash red two times. This indicates that youhave successfully entered a valid HomeID code(000 to 255). Go to step 7 of this procedure.• If an invalid HomeID code is entered, the STBmode key will display a long red flash. This indicatesthat you have not entered a valid HomeID code(000 to 255). The remote then returns to normaloperation. You will have to start over from step 1 ofthis procedure.7. Point the remote toward the set-top and then pressthe ENTER key on the remote. The remotetransmits the HomeID code using IR. The red LEDwill illuminate during transmission of the HomeIDcode.8. To store your new HomeID code into the remotecode, press the ENTER key on the remote again.Notes:• If any other key is pressed except the number keysand the ENTER key, the remote will not accept anychanges or updates. The STB mode key will displaya long red flash and the remote returns to normaloperation.• If the remote times out before you completeprogramming the HomeID code, the remote will notaccept any changes. You will have to start over fromstep 1 of this procedure.Program Decoder ID(Program Code 912)Programming the Decoder ID is necessary to identifyeach set-top box assigned to different rooms in thehome or office. All RF devices have the Decoder IDset to 00 by default. Complete the following steps toset a new Decoder ID.1. Ensure that the set-top is plugged into an electricaloutlet and that you have the remote in the sameroom as the set-top.2. Press and hold the STB mode key on the remote.3. Besure to record your new Decoder ID in the spaceprovided at the end of this section.Notes:• If a valid Decoder ID code is entered, the STB modekey will flash red three times. This indicates thatyou have successfully entered a valid Decoder IDcode (1, 2, or 3). The new valid Decoder ID isstored into the EEPROM of the remote. Theremote then returns to normal operation.• If an invalid Decoder ID code is entered, the STBmode key will display a long red flash. Thisindicates that you have not entered a validDecoder ID code (1, 2, or 3). The remote thenreturns to normal operation. You will have to startover from step 1 of this procedure.Notes:• If any key other than the required digit key and theon-display menu control keys are pressed duringthe Decoder ID programming, the STB mode keywill display a long red flash and the remote will returnto normal operation.• If the remote times out before you completeprogramming the Decoder ID code, the remote willnot accept any changes. You will have to start overfrom step 1 of this procedure.• If you are unable to program a new Decoder ID, theprevious Decoder ID is retained.Change Volume ControlBy default, once the TV mode key is programmed witha valid code, the volume and mute buttons controlyour TV. These keys adjust the volume of your TVhigher, lower, or temporarily switch the volume off(Mute), regardless of whether the remote is in STB,TV, DVD, or AUX mode.If you prefer, you can choose to have the volume andmute buttons always control a different device ratherthan your TV, such as a home theater receiver. (SeeControlling Volume for One Device below.) Notethat you must first program one of the mode keys, such as AUX, with a valid code for that device.Alternatively, you can choose to have the volume andmute buttons control different devices when theremote is in different modes. For example, you mightwant to control the volume on your TV when in TVmode, but the volume on your home theater receiverwhen in AUX mode. (See Controlling Volume forDifferent Devices below.) Note that not all deviceshave volume controls, so if you choose this option, thevolume and mute buttons may do nothing in somemodes, such as STB and DVD.Controlling Volume for One Device(Program Code 955)1.
