BH-S ERIES I NSTALLATION, OPERATION AND S ERVICE MANUAL4SECTION 3: CLEARANCES TO COMBUSTIBLES3.1 Required Clearances to CombustiblesClearances are the required distances thatcombustible objects must be away from the heater toprevent serious fire hazards. Combustibles arematerials that may catch on fire and include commonitems such as wood, paper, rubber, fabric, etc.Maintain clearances to combustibles at all timesfor safety.Clearances for all heater models are located on theburner of the heater and on Page 5, Figure 3 throughPage 8, Figure 12 in this manual. Check theclearances on each burner for the model heaterbeing installed to make sure the product is suitablefor your application and the clearances aremaintained. Read and follow the safety guidelinesbelow:• Keep gasoline or other combustible materialsincluding flammable objects, liquids, dust orvapors away from this heater or any otherappliance.• The stated clearances to combustibles representsa surface temperature of 90° F (32° C) aboveroom temperature. Building materials with a lowheat tolerance (such as plastics, vinyl siding, canvas, tri-ply, etc) may be subject to degradationat lower temperatures. It is the installer’sresponsibility to assure that adjacent materialsare protected from degradation.• Maintain clearances from heat sensitiveequipment and workstations.• Maintain clearances from vehicles parked belowthe heater.• Maintain clearances from swinging and overheaddoors, overhead cranes, vehicle lifts, partitions, storage racks, hoists, building construction, etc.• In locations used for the storage of combustiblematerials, signs must be posted to specify themaximum permissible stacking height to maintainrequired clearances from the heater to thecombustibles. Signs must be posted adjacent tothe heater thermostat. In the absence of athermostat, signs must be posted in aconspicuous location.• Consult local Fire Marshal, Fire Insurance Carrieror other authorities for approval of proposedinstallation when there is a possibility of exposureto combustible airborne materials or vapors.• Hang heater in accordance to the minimumsuspension requirements on Page 14, Figure 14.• If the radiant tubes must pass through the buildingstructure, be sure that adequate sleeving and firestop is installed to prevent scorching and/or firehazard.WARNINGFire HazardKeep all flammable objects, liquids andvapors the minimum required clearances tocombustibles away from heater. Some objects will catch fire or explode whenplaced close to heater.Failure to follow these instructions can resultin death, injury or property damage.
