12Setting UpThis section contains information about setting up your PSR-740/640 and preparing to play.Be sure to go through this section carefully before turning the power on.CAUTION• Never interrupt the powersupply (e.g. unplug the ACadaptor) during any PSR-740/640 record operation!Doing so can result in aloss of data.Power supply connections1 Make sure that the STANDBY/ON switch of thePSR-740/640 is set to STANDBY.WARNING• Use ONLY a Yamaha PA-6AC Power Adaptor (orother adaptor specificallyrecommended by Yamaha)to power your instrumentfrom the AC mains. Theuse of other adaptors mayresult in irreparabledamage to both theadaptor and the PSR-740/640.• Unplug the AC PowerAdaptor when not usingthe PSR-740/640, or duringelectrical storms.3 Plug the AC adaptor into an AC outlet.When turning the power OFF, simply reverse theprocedure.Connecting a footswitchn FOOT SWITCH jackThe sustain function lets you produce a natural sustain as you play by pressing afootswitch. Plug an optional Yamaha FC4 or FC5 footswitch into this jack and use it toswitch sustain on and off. The footswitch connected to this jack can also be set toreplicate the functions of some panel buttons, doing things like starting and stoppingaccompaniment (page 137).• Be sure that you do notpress the footswitch whileturning the power on. If youdo, the ON/OFF status of thefootswitch will be reversed.• When the sustain orsostenuto pedal functionsare being used (page 137),some voices may soundcontinuously or have a longdecay after the notes havebeen released while thepedal is held.2 Connect the optional AC adaptor (PA-6 or otheradaptor specifically recommended by Yamaha) tothe power supply jack.n FOOT VOLUME jackConnecting an optional Yamaha FC7 foot controller lets you use your foot to changethe volume as you play the PSR-740/640 (expression function). The foot controllerconnected to this jack can also be set to replicate the functions of the main volumecontrols, such as accompaniment or song volume (page 138).10• Recorded data is retained inmemory even when theSTANDBY switch is turnedoff if an AC adaptor isconnected.
