This is done by firstwrapping a fitted cuff around the upper arm. The monitorthen automatically fills the cuff with air creating pressurearound the arteries inside of the arm. Mounted inside of thecuff is a special gauge that is capable of sensing the smalloscillations (fluctuations) in pressure. These fluctuations areproduced as a result of the pressure the cuff has placedaround the arm and are, in a basic sense, the arteries pulsing(getting larger and smaller) with each beat. The monitor thenmeasures how high and how quickly these pulses occur andconverts that information into a digital value. A special valve,called an electrode, deflates the monitor automatically whenthe measurement is complete.Measurement MethodWalgreens monitors have been clinically tested against ascientific device called a sphygmomanometer, considered thegold standard in blood pressure measurement.
