OperationNote: Determine the left and right sides of themachine from the normal operating position. Before Operation SafetyGeneral Safety• Never allow children or untrained people tooperate or service the machine. Local regulationsmay restrict the age of the operator. The owneris responsible for training all operators andmechanics.• Become familiar with the safe operation of theequipment, operator controls, and safety signs.• Know how to stop the machine and shut off theengine quickly.• Check that operator-presence controls, safetyswitches, and shields are attached and functioningproperly. Do not operate the machine unless theyare functioning properly.• Before mowing, always inspect the machine toensure that the blades, blade bolts, and cuttingassemblies are in good working condition.Replace worn or damaged blades and bolts in setsto preserve balance.• Inspect the area where you will use the machineand remove all objects that the machine couldthrow.Fuel Safety• Use extreme care in handling fuel. It is flammableand its vapors are explosive.• Extinguish all cigarettes, cigars, pipes, and othersources of ignition.• Use only an approved fuel container.• Do not remove the fuel cap or fill the fuel tankwhile the engine is running or hot.• Do not add or drain the fuel in an enclosed space.• Do not store the machine or fuel container wherethere is an open flame, spark, or pilot light, suchas on a water heater or other appliance.• If you spill fuel, do not attempt to start the engine;avoid creating any source of ignition until the fuelvapors have dissipated.Checking the Engine-OilLevelService Interval: Before each use or dailyThe engine is shipped with oil in the crankcase;however, the oil level must be checked before andafter the engine is first started. The crankcase capacity is approximately 3.8 L (4.0US qt) with the filter.Use high-quality engine oil that meets the followingspecifications:• API Classification Level Required: CH-4, CI-4 orhigher.• Preferred oil: SAE 15W-40 (above -17ºC (0ºF))• Alternate oil: SAE 10W-30 or 5W-30 (alltemperatures)Note: Toro Premium Engine oil is available from adistributor in either 15W-40 or 10W-30 viscosity. Seethe parts catalog for part numbers.Note: The best time to check the engine oil is whenthe engine is cool before it has been started for theday. If it has already been run, allow the oil to drainback down to the sump for at least 10 minutes beforechecking. If the oil level is at or below the Add markon the dipstick, add oil to bring the oil level to the Fullmark. Do not overfill. If the oil level is between theFull and Add marks, you do not need to add oil.1. Park the machine on a level surface, lower thecutting units, shut off the engine, engage theparking brake, and remove the key from theignition switch.2. Remove the dipstick (Figure 36) and wipe it witha clean rag.g008881Figure 361. Dipstick3. Push the dipstick down into the dipstick tubeand ensure that it is seated fully, then pull thedipstick out and check the oil level.26
