Chapter 7TroubleshootingThe engine loses power.Possible Cause Corrective ActionThe engine load is excessive. Reduce the ground speed.The air cleaner is dirty. Service the air-cleaner element.The oil level in the crankcase is low. Add oil to the crankcase.The cooling fins and air passages under theengine blower housing are plugged.Remove the obstruction from the coolingfins and air passages.A spark plug is pitted, fouled, or the gap isincorrect.Install a new, correctly gapped spark plug.The vent hole in the fuel cap is plugged. Clean or replace the fuel cap.Dirt is in the fuel filter. Replace the fuel filter.Dirt, water, or stale fuel is in the fuel system. Contact an Authorized Service Dealer.The engine does not start, starts hard, or fails to keeprunning.Possible Cause Corrective ActionThe fuel tank is empty or the shutoff valve isclosed.Fill the fuel tank with fuel and open thevalveA spark-plug wire is loose or disconnected. Install the wire on spark plug.A spark plug is pitted, fouled, or the gap isincorrect.Install a new, correctly gapped spark plug.The air cleaner is dirty. Service the air-cleaner element.Dirt is in the fuel filter. Replace the fuel filter.Dirt, water, or stale fuel is in the fuel system.
