13Attaching the Grass DeflectorAttaching the grass deflector differs depending on the typeof trimmer: curved shaft or straight shaft.WARNING:The line cut-off blade on the grass deflectoris sharp. Failure to attach the grassdeflector can result in debris being thrown at theoperator and result in serious injury.To Attach the Curved Shaft Grass DeflectorModel No. 51957See Figure 4.Follow these steps to attach the curved shaft grass deflector.1. Stop the engine and disconnect the spark plug wire.2. Remove the hex head cap screw, flat washer, lockwasher, and wing nut from the grass deflector.3. Press the grass deflector onto the bottom of the curvedshaft as shown.4. Insert the hex head cap screw through the grass deflec-tor bracket.5. Place the flat washer and lock washer on the hex headcap screw.6. Place the wing nut on the hex head cap screw and turnclockwise to secure.To Attach the Straight Shaft Grass DeflectorModel No. 51977See Figure 5.Follow these steps to attach the straight shaft grass deflector.1. Stop the engine and disconnect the spark plug wire.2. Remove the bolt from the grass deflector.3. Insert the tab on the mounting bracket in the slot on thegrass deflector.4. Align the screw hole in the mounting bracket with thescrew hole in the grass deflector.5. Insert the bolt through the mounting bracket and intothe grass deflector.6.
