Brake MaintenanceAdjusting the Service BrakesAdjust the service brakes when there is more than 25 mm (1inch) of free travel of the brake pedal, or when the brakesdo not work effectively. Free travel is the distance the brakepedal moves before you feel braking resistance.Note: Use the wheel motor backlash to rock the drumsback and forth to ensure that the drums are free prior to andafter adjustment.1. To reduce free travel of the brake pedals, tighten thebrakes by loosening the front nut on the threaded endof the brake cable (Figure 43).1 2Figure 431. Brake cables 2. Front nuts2. Tighten the rear nut to move the cable backward untilbrake pedals have 1.27 to 1.9 cm (1/2 to 3/4 inch) offree travel, before wheel lock up is achieved.3. Tighten the front nuts, ensuring that both cablesactuate the brakes simultaneously.Adjusting the Parking BrakeIf the parking brake fails to engage, an adjustment to thebrake pawl is required.1. Loosen the 2 screws securing the parking brake pawlto the frame (Figure 44).1 4 32Figure 441. Brake cables 3. Parking brake pawl2. Screws (2) 4. Brake detent2.
