Traction Assist is now automatic and requires no operatorinput. When a wheel starts to slip, flow is automatically splitbetween the front and rear wheels to minimize wheel slipand loss of traction.Use extra care when operating the machine on slopes. Makesure that the ROPS is in the raised position, the seat latch isproperly secured and the seat belt is buckled. Drive slowlyand avoid sharp turns on slopes to prevent roll overs. Forsteering control, lower he cutting unit must be lowered beforegoing downhill. Before stopping the engine, disengage all controls and changethe throttle to Slow, which reduces the high engine speed, noise, and vibration. Turn the key to Off to stop the engine. Before transporting the machine, raise the cutting units andsecure the transport latches (Figure 31).Figure 311. Transport latch (side cutting units)Operating TipsMow When Grass Is DryMow either in the late morning to avoid the dew, whichcauses grass clumping, or in late afternoon to avoid thedamage that can be caused by direct sunlight on the sensitive,freshly-mowed grass.Select the Proper Height-of-Cut Settingto Suit ConditionsRemove approximately 1 inch (25 mm) or no more than 1/3of the grass blade when cutting. In exceptionally lush anddense grass, you may need to raise the height-of-cut to thenext setting.Mow at Proper IntervalsUnder most normal conditions you will need to mowapproximately every 4 to 5 days. But remember, grass growsat different rates at different times. This means that in orderto maintain the same height of cut, which is a good practice, you will need to cut more frequently in early spring; as thegrass growth rate slows in mid summer, cut only every 8 to 10days. If you are unable to mow for an extended period dueto weather conditions or other reasons, mow first with theheight of cut at a high level; then mow again 2 to 3 days laterwith a lower height setting.TransportingUse the transport latches when transporting over longdistances, rough terrain, or when trailering. After OperatingTo ensure optimum performance, clean the underside of themower housing after each use. If residue is allowed to buildup in the mower housing, cutting performance decreases.Cutting Unit PitchUse a blade pitch of 8 to 11 mm (5/16 to 7/16 inch). A pitchlarger than 8 to 11 mm (5/16 to 7/16 inch) results in lesspower required, larger clippings, and a poorer quality of cut. Apitch less than 8 to 11 mm (5/16 to 7/16 inch) results in morepower required, smaller clippings and a better quality of cut.Maximizing Air ConditionerPerformance• To limit solar heating, park the machine in a shaded areaor leave the doors open in direct sun.• Check to make sure that the air conditioning condenserfins are clean.• Operate the air-conditioner blower at the middle-speedsetting.• Verify continuous seal between the roof and the headliner.Correct as required.• Measure the air temperature at the front center vent inthe headliner (Typically stabilize at less than or equal to50 degrees F).• Refer to the Service Manual for additional information.34
