If thecountry you visit employs a different shapedsocket, use the correct plug adaptor.Consult your nearest travel bureau for the type ofplug adaptor needed for your trip.Listening to music1 Connect the headphones to the AVequipment.* “WALKMAN” and “WALKMAN” logo areregistered trademarks of Sony Corporation.Notes• When connecting the cord, insert the plug into thejack until the green portion of the plug disappears.• To disconnect the cord, pull it out by the plug, notthe cord, as the inner conductors may break.2 Turn on the power on the right side of theheadphones.The POWER indicator lights up in blue, and ashort beep sounds from the unit.3 Put on the headphones.After confirming the cord on the left and thePOWER switch on the right, put on theheadphones.Adjust the ear pads so as to cover your ears.5 Set the POWER switch of theheadphones to “OFF,” and then set thePOWER switch of the battery case to“ON.”The POWER indicator on the battery caselights up green.See steps 2 to 4 of “Listening to music” forthe following setting steps.After use, set the POWER switch of both theheadphones and the battery case to “OFF.”z Tips• The power supply of the rechargeable battery isconsumed first, unless the battery runs out.• If you connect and turn on the connecting cord withbattery case in advance when the rechargeable batteryis low, you can use the headphones uninterrupted,even after the battery in the headphones runs out.Notes• The use of manganese batteries is not recommended,since this type of battery has an extremely shortusage time.• The battery case supplies the power to theheadphones for operation purposes only. It does notcharge the internal rechargeable battery in theheadphones.• The POWER indicator of the battery case becomesdim when the battery life is reaching the limit.Replace the battery with new ones at the time.• The supplied connecting cord with battery case isonly for these headphones. Charge the battery before use.Connect the supplied AC power adaptor to the DCIN 6V jack on the headphones and an AC outlet.The charge indicator lights up in orange andcharging starts.Charging is completed after about three hours,and the charge indicator goes out.Disconnect the AC power adaptor after thecharging has finished.Notes• Use the AC power adaptor supplied with this unit. Donot use any other AC power adaptor since it maycause the unit to malfunction.Polarity of the plug• Avoid exposure to temperature extremes, directsunlight, moisture, sand, dust or mechanical shock.Never leave in a car parked in the sun.• Charge in an environmental temperature of between0°C and 40°C (between 32°F and 104°F). Otherwise,the battery may not be fully charged.• If you haven’t used the headphones for a long periodof time, the life of the rechargeable battery maybecome short. This will improve when you repeat thecharging and discharging process several times.• When the battery life reduces to half, this may be theend of battery lifetime. For how to change batteries,consult your place of purchase or a Sony dealer.• Do not store the headphones in hot places for a longperiod of time. When storing it for more than a year,charge the battery once a year to prevent overdischarge.• You cannot charge the rechargeable battery using thesupplied connecting cord with battery case.Noise CancelingHeadphonesOperating InstructionsMode d’emploiMDR-NC500D©2008 Sony Corporation Printed in Malaysia3-278-744-23(1) 4 Start playing on the AV equipmentconnected to the headphones.NotePlayback is not available when there is nopower.Utilizing the AI NoiseCanceling1 Press the AI NC MODE button.When you press the AI NC MODE button andthe POWER switch is set to “ON”, soundscome from the headphones to inform you thatthe unit has started analyzing ambient soundcomponents (approx. 3 seconds).During analysis, sound reproduction from theunit is stopped and the POWER indicatorlights in pink.When analysis is completed, the mosteffective noise canceling mode is setautomatically, and sound reproduction fromthe headphones starts.AI Noise CancelingAI Noise Canceling is a useful function thatautomatically selects one of the noise cancelingmodes. This function provides the most effectivenoise canceling mode by immediately analyzingambient sound components when the AI NCMODE button is pressed.z Tips• When the power of the headphones is turned on,mode A is set. (See “Noise canceling mode types,”for details about Mode A.)• Press the AI NC MODE button again to reset thenoise canceling mode if ambient noise has changed,such as when you move outdoors from a room.To set the noise canceling modemanuallyYou can set the noise canceling mode manually(manual noise canceling).1 Press and hold the AI NC MODE buttonfor more than one second.Sounds ( ) come from the headphones toinform you that manual noise canceling is set.2 Press the AI NC MODE buttonrepeatedly to change the mode type.The POWER indicator blinks pink and abeep(s) sound(s) from the headphones. Afterthat, the noise canceling mode is set. Thenumber of POWER indicator blinks and thebeep sounds depends on the mode selected.See “Noise canceling mode types.”z Tips• Mode A is selected when manual noise canceling isactivated.• To change from manual noise canceling to AI NoiseCanceling, press and hold the AI NC MODE buttonfor more than one second. When you hear the sounds( ) to inform you of the change to AI NoiseCanceling, press the AI NC MODE button again.Ambient analysis starts and the most effective noisecanceling mode is set automatically.Noise canceling mode typesMode names Number of POWER indicatorblinks (pink) and beepsoundsA 1B 2C 3A:Noise mainly in an airplane is effectively reduced.B: Noise mainly in a bus or a train is effectivelyreduced.C: Noise mainly found in an office environment (PC,copier, air ventilation, etc.) is effectively reduced.Hearing environmentalsound for safetyIf the MONITOR button is pressed and held whilethe POWER switch is set to ON, playback silencesthen you can hear the surrounding environment.NoteEnvironmental sound might not be heard if themicrophone is covered with your fingers.When using in anairplane• The supplied plug adaptor can be connected tothe dual or stereo mini jacks in an airplane.• Do not use the headphones when use ofelectronic equipment is prohibited, or when useof personal headphones for in-flight musicservices are prohibited.How to use theconnecting cord withbattery caseYou can continue to use the unit, even when therechargeable battery in the headphones runs out,by connecting the supplied connecting cord withbattery case.Use the connecting cord with battery case byinserting two size AA alkaline batteries.1 Open the lid of the battery case.2 Insert two size AA alkaline batteries.Make sure of direction, matching the emarks in the case with those on the batteries.3 Close the lid.4 Connect the supplied connecting cordwith battery case to both the headphonesand AV equipment.Notes• When connecting the cord, insert the plug fully into thejack so that the green sign on the metal parts cannot beseen.• When disconnecting the cord, pull it out by holding theplug. If the cord is pulled forcibly the wire may break.Disposing of the unitThe unit contains a rechargeable Lithium-Ionbattery. For environmental conservation, be sureto remove the built-in rechargeable batteries fromthe unit before disposing, and dispose of thebatteries appropriately.1 Pull off the earpad on the left housing,and unwind the two screws located as inthe illustration.12L2 Turn down the left housing and pull offthe outer cover.3 Keep the cord away from the rechargeablebattery.First, remove the adhesive tape on the surfaceof the battery. Then, loosen the cord justbeside the rechargeable battery.NoteBe careful not to break the internal wires.4 Pull out the connector on the board.NoteBe careful not to break the internal wireswhen disconnecting the connector.5 Remove the rechargeable battery.The rechargeable battery is firmly installed byadhesive tape. Take out the rechargeablebattery by lifting up in the direction of thearrow shown in the illustration.NoteRemove the rechargeable battery, taking carenot to damage it.EnglishBefore operating the unit, please read this manualthoroughly and retain it for future reference.WARNINGTo reduce the risk of fire orelectric shock, do not expose thisapparatus to rain or moisture.To reduce the risk of electricalshock, do not open the cabinet.Refer servicing to qualifiedpersonnel only.Connect the AC power adaptor to an easilyaccessible AC outlet. Althoughnoise is reduced, it is not canceled completely.• When you use the headphones in a train or acar, noise may occur depending on streetconditions.• Howling may occur if you do not wear theheadphones correctly.• Howling may occur if you place an object suchas finger close to inside of the headphones.Keep it away from the headphones.• Mobile phones may cause interference andnoise. To avoid interference, use noisecanceling feature only with wirelesstransmitters turned off (Airplane Mode).Interference noise can also occur from nearbymobile phones.
