84USIf you experience any of the followingdifficulties while using the system, use thistroubleshooting guide to help remedy theproblem before requesting repairs. Should anyproblem persist, consult your nearest Sonydealer.Note that if service personnel changes someparts during repair, these parts may be retained.PowerThe power is not turned on.• Check that the AC power cord (mains lead) isconnected securely.If “PROTECTOR” and “PUSH POWER”appears alternately in the front panel display.Press "/1 to turn off the system, and check thefollowing items after “STANDBY” disappears.• Are you using only the specified speakers?• Is anything blocking the ventilation holes of thesystem?After checking the above items and fixing anyproblems, turn on the system. If the cause of theproblem cannot be found even after checking all theabove items, consult your nearest Sony dealer.PictureThere is no picture.• The video connecting cords are not connectedsecurely.• The video connecting cords are damaged.• The system is not connected to the correct TVinput jack (page 11, 23).• The video input on the TV is not set so that youcan view pictures from the system.• You have set progressive format but your TVcannot accept the signal in progressive format. Inthis case, return the setting to interlace format (thedefault setting) (page 26).• Even if your TV is compatible with progressiveformat (525p/625p) signals, the image may beaffected when you set progressive format. In thiscase, return the setting to interlace format (thedefault setting) (page 26).• Re-connect the connecting cord securely.• The system is connected to an input device that isnot HDCP (high-bandwidth digital contentprotection) compliant (“HDMI” on the front paneldoes not light up). See page 96.• If the HDMI OUT jack is used for video output,changing the [HDMI RESOLUTION] setting in[SCREEN SETUP] may solve the problem(page 78).Connect the TV and the system using a video jackother than the HDMI OUT, and switch the TV’sinput to the connected video input so that you cansee the on-screen displays. Change the [HDMIRESOLUTION] setting in [SCREEN SETUP],and switch the TV’s input back to HDMI. If thepicture still does not appear, repeat the steps andtry other options.• You have selected “PROGRESSIVE AUTO” or“PROGRESSIVE VIDEO” using thePROGRESSIVE button on the remote(“PROGRE” lights up in the front panel display)even though your TV cannot accept theprogressive signal. In this case, disconnect theHDMI cord from the system and then select“INTERLACE” so that the PROGRESSIVEindicator turns off.• If the signal from the S VIDEO OUT jack isdistorted, change the [HDMI RESOLUTION]setting in [SCREEN SETUP] to [720 × 480p] *.* Depending on the country, [720 × 480/576p] mayappear.Picture noise appears.• The disc is dirty or flawed.• If the picture output from your system goesthrough your VCR to get to your TV, the copy-protection signal applied to some DVD programscould affect picture quality. If you still experienceproblems even when you connect your systemdirectly to your TV, try connecting your system toyour TV’s S video input (page 23).Even though you set the aspect ratio in [TVTYPE] of [SCREEN SETUP], the picture doesnot fill the screen.• The aspect ratio on the disc is fixed.Color irregularity occurs on the TV screen.The speakers in this system are magneticallyshielded to prevent magnetic leakage. However,some leakage may occur, as a high-strength magnetis employed. If this happens, check the followingitems:• If the speakers are used with a CRT-based TV orprojector, install the speakers at least 0.3 m (1.0 ft)from the TV set.• If the color irregularity persists, turn off the TV setonce, then turn it on after 15 to 30 minutes.• If howling occurs, reposition the speakers fartheraway from the TV set.Troubleshooting
